Janice Thompson, Melinda Manore. A unique aspect of the book is its presentation of nutrients based on function, rather than chemical classification

&>Nutrition for Life capitalizes on students’ natural interest in nutrition by demonstrating how it relates directly to their health and daily lives. This book is unique among introductory texts in its presentation of nutrients based on function, rather than chemical classification.Within the vitamins and minerals chapters, micronutrients are organized by their various functions within the body (such as tissue guardians, antioxidants, energy generators, essential electrolytes, mineral power plants, blood fortifiers, bone builders), enabling students to think about them conceptually while also understanding their basic roles in the body. This discourages rote memorization and promotes fuller and more accessible understanding of each micronutrients’ importance. For those instructors who still want their students to understand the traditional chemical organization, the micronutrient chapters include detailed tables and overviews of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, and the trace and major minerals.

Beyond the functional approach, Nutrition for Life includes applied features such as Eating Right All Day, Foods You Don’t Know You Love Yet, and new Cooking videos. The Third Edition also includes additional content with engaging new features, fewer Nutri-Cases, and the new MyPlate food patterns and recommendations. The art and photos have also been updated, along with a fresh interior design.

This book is basically corporate marketing sprinkled with scientific information and some sadly outdated nutritional guidelines still touting Ye Good Olde Pyramid. The book's presentation of such chemicals as aspartame and Olean as benign may be debatable by some, but statements such as "there currently does not appear to be enough evidence to suggest that eating too much sugar causes hyperactivity or other behavioral problems in children" and "there is no scientific evidence that eating a diet high in sugar causes diabetes" reveal part of the problem. So the sweetner industry need not worry about this book casting it in a bad light!

Nor should the tuna industry: While the book warns about mercury in swordfish and shark, there's not a peep about tuna, the most commonly eaten high-mercury fish. The book even recommends that pregnant women eat at least 12 oz of tuna weekly, above FDA recommended limits!

And then there's the constant barrage of blatant ads under the guise of helpful information. How people process information is a well-studied topic. The numerous product placements (McDonalds, Gatorade, Dannon, Jif, Fat-Free Fig Newtons, Best Food Light Mayo, Low-Fat Kettle Krisps, Seagram's, Shape Magazine, etc.) and juxtaposed headlines send blatantly positive messages about the sponsors, despite whatever the small print may say. If anything, this is a sad statement about the hijacking of education by corporations.

The online software diet analysis tool is not bad, however, even though gaining access to the site, despite the access code, was problematic.

Excellent book. used for Nutrition class at UW-Wisconsin Online, but very helpful in daily life as well. Eye opening for those of us who know nothing about nutrition! Especially vitamins. This book explains the good and bad of vitamins, how they benefit the body and even toxicity if you take too much. Yes, too much of some vitamins it really bad for you, even if it is in the food we eat. Very informational.

I bought this for an online nutrition class. The book was required, and although I thought this might be one of those boring and hard to understand textbooks that teachers make you read, I was wrong. The chapters are quite interesting to make you want to read more. The book also teaches you about how to eat healthy in correct ways. I think it's beneficial for both students and people who are looking to change their bad eating habits. It opens your mind about food.

I had to get this book for my nutrition class and the book was like new, there were no missing nor ripped pages and I was pleased to see that there were no marks within it. The book is easy to use and understand, it gives great descriptions and illustrations for those who might be visual learners.

I ordered this as a textbook for a nutrition course. It is up to date as far as some of the "extra" sections, and it served its purpose for the course. However, there was a typo in the BMI calculation, so I am giving this four stars. I figure if there is one mistake, there may be more.
