There is not much useful information on how to be successful in setting up and running an accelerated Durability test. There are lots of good cautions of why certain test techniques are not useful, or are incomplete. If you need cautions to save you from committing errors, this is your book! But it could be summarized in a very short pamphlet, not a long book.

By definition, Reliability is the ability of an item to perform a required function under stated conditions for a stated time span. Durability of a material or product implies its endurance in performance over an extended time, measured in years and even decades. With such time spans, it becomes impossible to precisely estimate, let alone prove a product under service over its life time. Accelerated Reliability and Durability Testing (ART& ADT) is a source of initial information for Accurate Quality, Reliability, Maintainability, and Durability Prediction.

Material inspectors/auditors view of reliability is that the product is assessed against a specification or set of quality tests and having passed is delivered to the customer. However, this approach provides no measure of quality over an extended usage time. Therefore, the need for a time based concept of quality is developed. The inspectors concept is not time-dependent. The product either passes a given test or it fails. On the other hand, reliability is usually concerned with failures in the time domain. This distinction marks the difference between traditional quality control, and the approach to reliability.

Accelerated life tests are qualification tests, conducted on components, materials, and manufacturing processes to determine their useful life in the required product application. Their purpose is not to expose defects, but to identify and quantify the failures and failure mechanisms which cause products to wear out at the end of their useful life. Because of this, accelerated life tests must last long enough to cause the samples under test to fail by wear out. The test time may typically vary from a few weeks to a few months.

In this specialized manual, Professor Klyatis introduces, where he expounds the new techniques recently employed and the available testing technology. He provides many case studies, and explores the industry standards, demonstrating how the implementation of ART and ADT can solve traditionally inaccessible problems in electronics and automotive products, helping industries to reduce product recalls, cutting cost and production time; during design, engineering, and manufacturing. Accelerated Reliability and Durability Testing Technology

I did not quite enjoy reading this book. It felt like a collection of research papers and is intended more for an audience that is specialized/experienced with the field of reliability and durability testing. I read this book to get a better understanding of the actual tests required for test and evaluation projects at work, but I am more involved with engineering design and integration.

The book does use a lot of recent examples (2008-2010), and cites automotive recalls as the result of insufficient reliability/durability testing. Although it looks clean cut, some automotive designs that end up as recalls are not always due to the original design. Like any bureaucracy, designs start from the bottom and work their way to the top. Along the way, the original design is changed due to cost or producibility issues (too expensive to manufacture, too expensive, etc...) and this is very true with Ford, GM, and Chrysler. These design changes aren't always made by the original engineering team, and they can make their way out the door into the suppliers that manufacture these parts for the OEMs. The composite intake manifolds used on 1996-2002 Ford modular V8 engines is a prime example of this. What vehicles used such engines? Any car, pickup truck, or van with a 4.6/5.4 V8 engine - which was a rather large number for model years 1996-2002! The composite coolant passages on the front were prone to rupturing/cracking causing coolant to spew into the engine compartment. Ford blamed the molding process used by the manufacturer of the intake, but in the end Ford switched to an aluminum crossover starting in 2003 but it took a class action lawsuit to resolve the issues on only some of the 96-02 vehicles already sold (not even a recall was issued). The 3V modular engines already used the aluminum intake passage, so the 4.6/5.4 3V engines on the 04-up F-series/E-series and 05-10 Mustangs did not have this issue.

I've also had test engineers tell me how they take their vehicles to "1 million miles" to prove out the durability, yet there are lots of quality issues when it comes to selling the final design. If you dig deeper, the OEMs only have a handful of test mules that rack up the mileage so the sampling size is very small (e.g., half a dozen Boss 302 Mustangs doing the road tests) In addition, there are numerous design changes/ECPs before the final design hits the manufacturing side, and factoring in manufacturing defects, the actual product may still suffer reliability/durability issues.

This book does contain a great deal of information, but even as an engineer I did not quite enjoy it as it read too much like a collection of research papers with some case studies - essentially being a specialized portion of reliability testing. If you work in the field of reliability/durability testing, I would recommend reading this book to see if anything new has been developed. In some of the case studies, I wish they looked at sampling size as well as the actual testing methods.

This was written, it seems to me, specifically as a University text. Though this text does contain additional information for those in the industry, the bulk of the content here is targeted for those with a general knowledge of engineering and math (Cal 1 would suffice I think). The text contains many charts and graphs for reference, but the real treat are the various case studies presented. These case studies show the results of properly applied ARD and ART.

Proper use of ART and ARD will SAVE MONEY! That is the main driving force behind learning the various ways to design and implement these policies and procedures. This book is a great addition to a general engineering library, and one that is very useful for engineering students, or those graduates entering the field. That way when you are in an interview and the boss asks "Tell me about ARD and ART and tell me how you can use these programs to save us money." and you can answer knowledgeably. Bosses love employees that save them money. Learn these procedures. Even a few managers might glean some knowledge from a quick read of this text.

This is a nicely packed volume with over 400 pages of well written examples, case studies, charts, graphs, and problems. The binding is tight, the sturdy cover will take a good amount of abuse. Great for students if you plan to resell this text later.
