The book is basically a collection of his words, what he said during. Since windows will only distract the students", must be resisted at all cost. Now, what kind of teacher deserves much attention? After all, the leaves falling from the tree outside, the bird perched on its branches, the person scamperring away from the rain. These are all great lessons in themselves.

For Kahn, the study of architecture was the study of human beings, their highest aspirations and most profound truths. In his buildings we see the realization of his vision: luminous surfaces that evoke a fundamental awe, silent courtyards that speak of the expansiveness and the sanctity of the spirit, monumental columns and graceful arches that embody dignity and strength

In the development of contemporary architecture, few have had greater influence than Louis I. Kahn, whose many buildings included the Salk Institute, the Yale Study Center, and the Exeter Library. For Kahn, the study of architecture was the study of human beings, their highest aspirations and most profound truths. John Lobell, who studied under Kahn while in architecture school, sensitively edits Kahn's own words and provides commentary on Kahn's ideas and his major buildings. In his work as an architect, Kahn searched for beginnings: the origin of joy and wonder, of intelligence, and intuition. He sought the basic principles of being, which he called Silence and Light. Kahn spoke of these qualities with tremendous power and grace. Between Silence and Light —one of the few books on Kahn written for a general audience—introduces us to Louis Kahn the architect and visionary.

This is a very cheaply produced book. Although the readings and insights may be useful or well done, the overall impression was awful. Be aware if you are looking for a book with images and descriptions of Kahn's works this is not it. The few photographs in the book are all black and white and very dark and grainy. They look more like cheap photocopies than an actual printed book and are almost impossible to view any of the details shown. Not recommended at all unless your main purpose in reading is more to have a textbook explaining in lectures some of Kahn's architectural ideas.

I always was a Louis Kahn admirer since my architecture student's years. This book is an excellent summary of his work.

This book is wonderful if you're a fan of Kahn's work. The book is unique in that the text is Kahn's original words. However, this book is not really a textbook - it functions more like a coffee table book. It has lots of photos and few words.

This was for my husband, to replace his battered old copy. It was a watershed book for him many years ago, and he still values it highly.
