First Clash: Combat Close-Up In World War Three by Macksey, Kenneth. Amongst many other books, Macksey wrote two volumes of alternate history, one, entitled Invasion, dealt with a successful invasion of England by Germany in 1940 and the other describing a NATO–Warsaw Pact clash in the late 1980s. The latter book was done under contract to the Canadian Forces and focuses on the Canadian role in such a conflict.

I wasn't dissappointed, the storyline with the build up to war & the subsequent events that took place had me riveted even though at the time of reading it I was in bed with flu.

by Kenneth Macksey  . The book doesn't even explain how hostilities start, but the bare bones is that it's 1984, and World War III is on. 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group then goes about it's business of fighting a landwar in Europe. What's so interesting about this is that it was originally issued as a field manual, and Macksey (who was with the Royal Tank Regiment and actually commanded a troop in Normandy) was brought in to basically punch it up and make it readable.

Gold as Heart
First Clash is a good and atypical novel of WW3 in Central Europe. The story focuses on the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group opposing an advance by Soviet forces instead of US or UK ground forces as is customary for such stories. The story is highly detailed and highly compressed in time, covering a span of only three days. First Clash is a very enjoyable read.

Several features recommend the book. The author focuses on realism to a degree seldom encountered in the technothriller genre. In fact, the emphasis on the nuts and bolts of realism give this book an aspect of training guide as much as military fiction. The story is replete with acronyms that would make it indigestible except for the handy reference guides at the front of the book. Rather than deal with the sweep of large-scale forces or overly poetic descriptions of combat from the point of view of individual soldiers, Macksey focuses on the conduct of operations by a single battalion within 4CMBG as it opposes the advance of numerically superior Soviet forces. His subject matter expertise gives the reader an understanding of the thought processes underlying the seeming chaos of the battlefield.

Character development is virtually non-existent. Even more so than other books of this type, First Clash reduces the people to named place holders. If one is interested in reading a highly realistic story set at the perspective of a combat battalion and its subunits, this is a reasonable trade-off. The narrative style is highly factual. There’s little of the imagery that one finds in Red Storm Rising or Team Yankee. For readers who prefer an enjoyable read of a novel, First Clash might be a disappointment.

Overall, First Clash is worth adding to the collection of anyone who likes a speculative war story narrated by an author who understands the subject matter. I will go back and read this story several times to sort out details I missed on the first reading.

Originally written as an official manual in 1985. This book details the efforts of a Canadian mechanized brigade to hold up the Soviet advance for 48 hours during the early stages of WWIII in Central Europe. The text is focused at the Battle Group/Combat Team level, following the activity from the assembly area to performing a withdrawal under pressure.
