The material in this book assumes no prior knowledge of pneumatics and could be used by anyone who has an interest in this particular area of fluid power. This book does not cover compressors and the rebuilding of pneumatic components. This book is not developed for engineers, but is directed at the hourly worker on the factory floor and therefore uses some generalizations and approximations.

Basic Pneumatics was developed as an introductory text for people who are studying to be maintenance personnel working on production machinery, and for upgrading the knowledge of other factory workers, including machine operators, line mechanics, and newly hired engineers. The book was designed to provide an alternative to the large number of books and manuals on the topic of pneumatics that have a heavy math and theoretical orientation.

Even considering that this is an introduction to pneumatics, it is very, very, very basic. I think that the author could have done more to explain each component - currently, there is only a quick blurb about each part. Each section doesn't go into much depth at all. Most of the information in this book can be easily found doing a quick search online. This book appears to intended to be used in a class because you need access to pneumatic components to do the exercises (of which there are only a few). As for the tests, they are okay, I suppose. The last test show components that haven't even been covered in the book. I'd only recommend this book for someone who has absolutely no knowledge of pneumatics and are not comfortable searching this information online.

It is not as easy to read as the description would have you believe. There are some equations an a lot of schematic diagrams that take an engineering degree to decipher, or at least a decent understanding of pneumatic diagramming. You do get instruction, but I would rather see the part being discussed as well as the diagram as it shows on the cover. That's not so much the case between the covers. This is the impression of someone familiar with electronic diagrams, but hasn't worked with pneumatics before.

This book is very, very basic. The author describes rudimentary pneumatics but leaves out any explanation. For example the valve symbols are shown but there are no descriptions what the inlets and the outlet are and what the various valves are used for. There is an "extensive" (for the book) description to filters and separators, but again no description why this is done. The writing style is rather flippant and condescending. I learned more from the Wikipedia article (and the links therein) than from this book.

I was excited to receive this book. I've dabbled with pneumatics for years but wanted to take my skills up a notch. This book did not help.

It is poorly written, managing to simultaneously be too confusing for a beginner (spending pages on minimizing water in your system, without ever telling you why you care) without being informative for someone with a bit of experience (if you can read the diagram on the side of a solenoid valve then this book will have nothing to teach you).

The chapter on air motors and air bearings, which I was looking forward to reading, contained no content at all and literally suggested the reader should "google these terms to learn more"... If I wanted to google terms, why would I buy this book?

Try another book -- this isn't the one.

This book has the information I was looking for and will be a great reference book for my job.
Just what I needed.
