The concept of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) has been developed in line with the International Commission on Radiation Protection recommendations on dose limitation. Its aim is to provide a realistic balance between the desire to keep radiation exposure to a minimum and the economic and social factors relevant to decisions on health and safety in the nuclear industry.
