State of the Art book. A revolution has been taking place in electronics. Spurred by the invention of the transistor in 1947 and of the integrated circuit in the late 1950's and early 1960's, computers and other electronics have become smaller, cheaper, more powerful, and more versatile. The fruits of this revolution are all around us in the form of hundreds of inventions based on the IC: person A revolution has been taking place in electronics.

A revolution has been taking place in electronics. Spurred by the invention of the transistor in 1947 and of the integrated circuit in the late 1950's and early 1960's, computers and other electronics have become smaller, cheaper, more powerful, and more versatile. The fruits of this revolution are all around us in the form of hundreds of inventions based on the IC: personal computers, robots, digital watches, video-cassette recorders, CAT scanners, the space shuttle, and, alas, smart bombs and cruise missiles. For better or worse, we have entered a new technological era. The star of this new era is the IC, chip, or microchip - one of the most important and, as the photos in this book reveal, beautiful inventions of the twentieth century. Here, then, is the story of the IC - of how it was invented, how it works, how it is made, and how it is used.

Absolutely incredible. Definitely recommended.

Anyone interested in how we got here in computers and electronics will see
the story through incredible pictures. It is amazing how the early crude, hashed-
together lab models became the basis for modern technological civilization.

I love looking at computers' metallic intestines; they seem to be designed with such an eye for aesthetics. (Does anyone else like to do that?) This book not only provides a readable (read:non-boring) history of computer chips, but displays colorful photographs of them in various stages of historic development. At first, the ICs are embarrassing to see: a gold arrow pointing into a rusty metal square, circuitry held in place with wax. But they soon become more advanced. Turn to a slightly later page, and you'll see what looks like a tamagotchi; from there, you'll come across one that resembles an abstract painting of a suburban neighborhood; a yet later model is like a golden Egyptian treasure with beads of lead strung across its middle. Not only will technical types enjoy this book, children will love it too.

This was a gift for my Dad, a pioneer in circuit board design. He really enjoyed the detailed pictures and the accompanying text. He said he remembered most of it and loved the "walk down memory lane".
