This is a coffee table book written in encyclopedia format and covering the American and Canadian railroad industry from its beginning through the end of the twentieth century. It attempts to cover way too much and as a result doesn't provide much useful information. Entries include a hodgepodge of topics like technology, the industry in general, employee relations, operating methods, financing, government regulation, etc.-170 years worth in 280 pages (including appendixes)! Each entry is a short paragraph and complex issues get summarized in a brief sound bite. I spotted obvious errors in topics I am familiar with which left me skeptical of the other entries. The pictures aren't much better, all b/w and poorly reproduced (paperback edition). I would have a hard time recommending this to anyone except a complete novice or a middle school student. Even then I recommend looking in the bargain bin for this title.

Excellent railroad history book I don't think it missed a moment in North American Railroad history. There were two small errors 1) the Grand Central Terminal was called the Grand Central Station (an error often made) 2) When talking about the ORPHAN TRAINS the "CHILDREN'S AIDE SOCIETY" was called the LEGAL AIDE SOCIRTY

I originally got this book for my husband, the train buff. I really had no idea what I was getting, but what a delightful surprise! I picked it up and have found it very well-written and presents what I thought would be dry textbook material in an enchanting and insightful way. The author's obvious joy in his topic is contagious.

I bought this book for my husband. He loves it! He has been into trains since he was a child. His grandfather was an engineer, and my husband, as a child used to go with him on the train occasionally. His grandfather also bought him the complete set of Lionel Trains about 50 years ago. The store only had the display modl, so they bought the entire set and had it delivered on a tractor trailer truck directly to the house already set up on a display table. It now resides in our basement, and it is quite a conversational piece.

The book arrived timely and in the condition that I expected. It was from a library and had been well cared for. I gave it as a gift to my step brother-in-law, who is a huge train buff, and he was and is still delighted. He was fascinated by the book from the moment he laid eyes on it.

LOVE THIS BOOK
Every new chapter I read is fascinating. It's not just chock full of great history but it's also well written and compelling. I need train info for my books and this may just be exactly what I was looking for!!!!!!!
This is an excellent depiction of American railroading. The addition of some U.S. History makes this superbly interesting. Whether a railroad or history buff (or not), this reading will grab your attention. The light humor also adds to the enjoyment of this book. Filled with very interesting facts on how the early railroads actually created & perfected many of the technologies we know today. You won't want to put this book down once you start reading it!
