Growing Up Delicious - Marianne Banks. Growing Up Delicious, my first novel, took 25 to 30 years to write with time off for bad behavior, coming out of the closet and self doubt. I am under-educated but could muddle through butchering a cow or stringing a barbed wire fence if I had to though I haven’t found much use for that in the suburbs. I can’t put any letters after my name except PO Box and that’s only if I’m writing out my address. The truth is I like writing stories because I like making things up. When I was growing up there were few stories for girls like me about girls like me and I wanted to write some.

I bought this because of a book club and was extremely hesitant about reading it, but I am glad I did. From the very first line of the book I knew I was going to be in for a mind expanding read (check it out with the "Look Inside Option"). As a first time author Marianne Banks starts off with a huge success in bringing a story to life through characters, story and having a well written book of which to be proud. It is one that will make its mark as the lesfic community continues to strive toward more and more stories that include the hard edge of reality. This book definitely pushes the lesfic genre out of the box. The story itself introduces topics that aren't found in majority of literature queer or straight, and Marianne Banks does it with amazing skill and mastery. I believe that this story introduces readers to the realistic idea of growing up queer in a small town, regardless of where that town is located. The extremes that hatred can take people to and how individuals can overcome and be stronger because of their upbringing. It is an accurate commentary on our lives and makes a statement on our hearts. Though this isn't the story I want to take to bed at night to create all those sweet dreams, it is a must read story for our community and I highly recommend it be read at least once.

This book had me laughing from the first paragraph and I laughed the hardest in the last chapter. The writing felt so real to me and I could relate to so much of it. The writing is different in that most of the characters get to speak directly to the reader at times. I liked this unique style as it was a nice change. This book may not be for everyone but this reader not only loved it but appreciated the heck out of it!

Growing Up Delicious is a wonderfully written book. The characters come to life to entertain to the reader, taking you from smiles to out loud laughter then to feeling their pain. This book grabs you on page one and doesn't let go. A great read!

What a funny, warm and delicious read. The story moved quickly, with great humor all the way through to a surprise ending. It isn't often that a book makes me laugh out loud in public places and this one did just that.

This novel has it all. Wit, warmth, fully fleshed characters, and a unique style all its own. The author is able to get inside the head of so many of her characters it amazed me. I felt like I really knew each of them. The flashbacks were woven so seamlessly into the plot that I often forgot it WAS a flashback until the story came back into the present. Not too many novels are able to do that, for me anyway.

The book is permeated with humor that manages to be irreverent and not crass. I laughed out loud more than once and smiled a great deal while reading this one. I liked that the author paced the story so well. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. The mark of a wonderful read!

You know what I liked about this book? Everything! It has all my favorite ingrediants - wonderful characters, black comedy, a nice message, lyrical writing... everything to make a delicious novel. I loved every bite.

Growing Up Delicious is an insightful, tender, sometimes laugh out loud funny novel. The story takes place in Delicious, a small New England town. The protagonist returns for her mother's funeral after leaving as a teen, and we get to see Delicious both through the eyes of that teen rebel and through the eyes of the adult woman she has become as she tries to make sense of her past. The characters are sharply drawn with several you will love to love, and others you will love to hate.

The author's wit is quirky as she reflects on small town life while giving no quarter to hypocrisy. I'll read anything from this writer.
This story is tender in all the right places, funny, with an undercurrent of serious family disaster. The protagonist discovers that few people are truly what they appear to be, certainly not the most self-righteous ones.
