I thoroughly enjoyed reading Richard Stevenson's A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Richard Stevenson's A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY. The mystery kept my interest and the wide range of "possible" villians kept me guessing to the end. I especially enjoyed reading a novel clearly written by a gay male. Stevenson's mysteries are addictive, mainly because the characters are so believable, there are more twists and turns to keep you constantly guessing, and they are not boringly serious, they can be quite funny at times. This story opens as Albany's gay Private Investigator, Donald Strachey, is asked to investigate the death of Phyllis Haig's, gay son, Paul.

Donald Strachey Mystery - 5 ). Richard Stevenson. 1. The voice was a combination of Locust Valley lockjaw and Marge Schott, by way of the Albany Gardening Club and the Mary Lou Whitney Lounge at the airport Americana. I'm not gonna bullshit around," Phyllis Haig said, a little louder than was necessary even amid the lunch-hour din at Le Briquet. Bullshitting around is not my style, you can ask anybody who knows me.

Donald "Don" Strachey is a fictional character who appears in novels by mystery writer Richard Stevenson. Strachey, a gay man, lives in Albany, New York, with his partner Timothy Callahan, who works as a legislative aide to a New York state senator. Don's clients often feel that his sexual orientation gives him an edge when called upon to investigate cases that involve Albany's gay community.

Shock to the System book. Donald Strachey is asked to investigate the suspicious death of Paul Haig by three different people-Haig's homophobic mother, his ex-lover, and the psychiatrist hired to "cure" him of his homosexuality. Just as he gets started, however, all three remove him from the case, leaving Strachey with a brutal murderer that now everyone wants left alone.

Young Paul Haig dies after hiring PI Donald Strachey. Despite his dislike of her, Strachey agrees with the boy's homophobic mother: Paul didn't commit suicide. But, she clings to deep denial about her son's sexual orientation. Conversion therapy - interventions to create ex-gays - get the once over in this Strachey mystery, and it ain't a pretty sight. (Don't let the HereTV adaptation of this story put you off this title)

Not much in the way of a hard mystery. Seemed a bit staged and predictable, with an ending that didn't quite fit, almost as if the author just wanted to finish and hand in the manuscript. Light, fun. Won't stress your brain cells or require too much deep thought.

Detective novels are among my favorite reads. The Don Strachey series is fantastic. This one is no exception. Check out the movie too. All four of the films diverge from the books a bit, but they still work.

In the electronic age, I still bought this one in print for my collection. I must admit that I'm gay and originally from Albany so I have a special affection for this series, but I think that it would appeal to everyone! Richard does a great job with each book. You can start anywhere in the series and not miss out. I really hope these guys get married now that it is legal in NY!

This is the 5th Strachey. I love this series, all good mysteries, with relatable characters and a good plot. Don is a guy one can really count on, proud (in the best sense) and unapologetic. His relationship with Timmy is in the background but the few dialogues they do share are clever and full of their own humor and tenderness. The writing is wonderful, as usual, i highly recommend this series.
