The “trauma of childbirth” is a commonly heard phrase, but one that Calm Birth authoritatively counters. Beginning with a history of the repression of women as midwives and healers and a look at the lingering legacy of that time, the book shows how to restore childbirth to its sacred status. Calm Birth combines three proven practices that together create a powerful new approach. These practices—relaxation, meditation, and healing—combine with current scientific knowledge to nurture the expectant mother’s natural ability to give birth in true harmony with her body and with her infant. The book contextualizes the multilayered Calm Birth method within the existing literature of mind/body medicine and meditation science, as well as the meditation traditions from which two of the methods originate. The author complements the thoughts of renowned experts including Carlos Castaneda and Carolyn Myss with eight inspiring case studies of women who have experienced calm births.

Way too crunchy granola. May other better books available regarding natural childbirth. Try Hypnobirthing instead.

I ordered this book because I want a "calm" birth experience. A good part of the book was just about the development of the calm birth method and not actually explaining it. The part where they actually go into explaining the actual method is a little short in my opinion. It would have been nice to have less of a history lesson and more of a true "calm birth" lesson. I do have it in my hospital bag and will read the relaxation technique again when I get to the hospital. Still would have liked to have more details.

As a veteran doula and midwifery student, this book is amoung my favorites. I love the tone and information contained in it. It's a great tool for helping moms surround their birth with peace.

This book is revolutionary for its time, offering a new technique for childbirth. The idea of incorporating the healing aspects of meditation into childbirth is brilliant. As a doula and Calm Birth teacher, I've seen this method empower pregnancy and birth, but it's necessary to buy the CD, which you can do at www.calmbirth.org.

I do wish that more people knew about the 2nd edition of the book, "Childbirth Meditation: the Calm Birth Method," which was published at the end of 2012. In it, Newman is able to incorporate more of the recent meditation studies into his own, and sink further into the potential that Calm Birth offers to humankind. This book is underexposed on Amazon-- you have to type in the whole title-- but you can also order it through calmbirth.org.

If you are planning on using this practice in your birth or for your clients, PLEASE order the CD! That is the most important part of the method-- the book helps you understand and apply it, but the audioguide teaches you the actual practice.

Based on established principles of psychosomatic medicine, Calm Birth compassionately guides mothers-to-be and new mothers through carefully structured relaxation and meditation practices. This is an empowering alternative to the medicalization of birth. Dr. Newman's techniques liberate women to channel their innate wisdom into welcoming their newborn child in a truly life affirming way.

I LOVE this book!!! It is VERY difficult to find a book about labor and delivery that is focused on natural, holistic philosophies. Of the few that are out there, this is by far the best! I started out with other, more well known approaches and appreciated the general nature of the techniques, but found them lacking in spiritual depth and feeling somewhat superficial. If you just want techniques, they may be good approaches for you. However, I was looking for something that had a deep, philsophical foundation in addition to great techniques. What I love about this book is how it talks about the entire process of pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartun care. It is truly an holistic approach and I am grateful to have stumbled upon it!! I can't wait to read the author's other books!

This book was okay, but too much background for most newcomers. I've been meditating with a less spiritual approach using mindfulness for almost 5 years and found this was too far to the spiritual side for me. There are useful exercises but the writing style was a bit too convoluted for the most part. I much preferred Mindful Birthing but I could see how others who are more into the spiritual aspect of meditation enjoying this book.
This book offers a method that is new in this sense, methods that are steeped in ancient tradition and proven scientifically have been brought together in a cohesive form for women to use in childbirth. It is a method that can help erase fears and help women discover their own power. This method gives women the opportunity to give birth to their baby in a concious and healthy way whether they have their babies without drugs, with drugs or by cesarean. I highly recommend this book.
