Merlene Miller, MA, is an addiction educator and author with 25 years of experience in the addiction field, specializing in relapse prevention. She has conducted relapse prevention workshops and retreats as well as staff training for state and national conferences. These and other questions are answered today by Dr. David Miller and Merlene Miller who are on the show to speak about their book Staying Clean and Sober: Natural Strategies for Healing the Addicted Brain, which offers natural approaches to overcoming addictions.

Have you or someone close to you struggled with addiction? Since addiction is largely a disease of the brain, the biochemical imbalances associated with addiction create chronic symptoms that often lead to relapse. This means that staying sober can require living with emotional, mental and physical pain-unless proper brain chemistry is restored. In this new edition of their award-winning book Staying Clean & Sober, addiction recovery experts Merlene and David Miller detail their groundbreaking approach to relapse prevention, as well as describe and evaluate other alternative addiction treatments. The Millers explain how certain amino acids and nutrients, combined with other alternative therapies and education, can result in sustained recovery rates of 80 percent or higher. In a straightforward and reader-friendly style, Staying Clean & Sober offers a new understanding of addiction, and ultimately new hope for an addiction-free lifestyle.

First let me start by saying this is an excellent book for alcohol addiction. I have not tried it for drug addiction, but It treats addictions in general as brain imbalances. Most addicts and drug abusers have a history of imbalanced neurological hormone production (sometimes going back to childhood) so they self-medicate. The alternative of putting them on SSRI's, anti-depressants, or stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin, only worsen the problem. Although the 12 step program helps some addicts and alcoholics, it does not address the cause, and for many their abstinence is like forever trying to ignore a bad itch (only much more profound!).

As a nutritionist I have recommended this book repeatedly. In two words: it works -- if one is serious about getting sober because nothing will help without the want-to.

However, be forewarned regarding the older, 2005 first edition. They sellers here have combined the reviews for both the 1st edition and the 2008 2nd edition so it's gets a bit dicey leaving a review. Once the reviews were combined I had to edit my review to cover both the older and newer edition. The newer book has a blue cover and the publication date is 2008. The first edition has a yellow cover.

Amazon no longer stocks and ships this book. When they did I used to get it for about $12 with free Prime shipping. Other booksellers who are still selling it here are price gouging. My local Barnes and Noble told me it was out of print. Since I give these books away and was not willing to pay the ridiculous prices on Amazon I contacted the authors to learn when the 2nd edition will be back on Amazon. I was told the distributor ran out of stock. This was in June, 2013 and distribution still seems to be a problem, and as of this update, October, 2014 it is no longer listed on the publisher's website. Thinking they might have chosen to self-publish I checked the author's website and found it for the cover price plus shipping. This book is well worth the trouble of buying if from the authors directly. I am posting the link in the comments section. (Amazon does not allow links in reviews.)

Here is another excellent book I recommend on this subject:Seven Weeks to Sobriety: The Proven Program to Fight Alcoholism through Nutrition.

And these books address mood disorder's which often lead to addiction: The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Take Charge of Your Emotions--Today and The UltraMind Solution: The Simple Way to Defeat Depression, Overcome Anxiety, and Sharpen Your Mind

Most excellent book and filled with practical help that touches on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual (not religious) - all aspects of our being and when we address all aspects, our chances of sobriety increase greatly.

We found this book to be easy to read, despite the technical content. Merlene and David Miller know how to present this kind of information in a way that keeps you interested. They are definitely showing how much misunderstanding is out there about addiction. We have been using one of the amino acid products for a nephew recovering from drug addiction and so far it is working fine. We would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an addiction or knows someone else who could use this advice. This would make an excellent book for rehabilitation centers to give to patients completing their program.

This was a gift. Don't know if the teen read it, but the teen is a totally different person. Sober over 10 months.

This is a very important topic and this book addresses it extremely well.I have done a lot of research on the topic and this book is one of the best I've read on the subject. The information is understandable to the layperson which I think is very important because it's the person in recovery who needs this understanding. Thank you.

A whole new way to look at the addicted brain. It is truly different, and it is about time that society realized it. They need to treat it as an illness instead of a crime. Rehab programs that don't use this information are also cruel. This is a life changing book.

This book is a good resource for gaining basic knowledge regarding addiction and recovery nutrician. It is easy to read and understand for the layperson.
