In the book, 'Movement of Power: Ancient Secrets of Unleashing Instinctual Vitality,' the author Bob Klein educates the reader on Tai Chi as well as departing wisdom on life. Incorporating tenets of Confucianism and Taoism, Tai Chi is a martial arts system which can also be used for exercise and personal health care. Described as meditation in motion, it involves a series of movements performed in a slow graceful manner, accompanied by deep breathing. Mr. Klein reveals this and much more through this book.

Expanding upon 3 themes, he begins with a comparison of Tai Chi to other mythologies, particularly Native American and Gnostic Christianity; illustrating that these philosophies preserved their wisdom in stories while Tai Chi preserves its wisdom through its movements. He continues by elaborating on his views of consciousness, awareness, and balance between body and mind, ending with a discussion on the relationship between the student and their teacher.

Of the three themes discussed, I found Mr. Klein's statements on mythology and consciousness to be most provocative. He feels that the core message of mythology concerns our self image, insinuating mythologies such as Gnostic Christianity advocated for people to get in touch with their 'true selves.' For Mr. Klein, this 'true self' is not transcendent of body consciousness, instead it consists of 'body mind,' as well as earth consciousness. It is the wellspring of our creativity and the totality of our experience. Stating that "the source of your existence, your true self... the one from whom it had come forth cannot be pinpointed or dissected out of your total experiences..' and 'our true self created all that we experience. It is all that we experience. The interplay of yin / yang is all that we know. That interplay is us... we can only know our true selves from our direct experiences. The mind is only a commentary on those experiences. It really is just another member of the community of experiences and not a master," Mr. Klein believes that at birth we are naturally disposed to be good and in harmony with the world.

Our dis-ease begins the moment we fabricate a false self. The false self is our persona, a mask which we use to navigate through life. Invented by both ourselves and society, our persona is utilized to act out our social roles, serving a public relations function. The problem is not with this false self that we adopt; it is in our identification with it because through our identification we dissociate ourselves from body-mind, and relationship with the earth, becoming fragmented. Again, quoting Mr. Klein;

"The problem arises when you forget that the personality was created and you identify solely with the personality.. Your true self then seems like an enemy of the personality.. Since we cannot conceive of our enemy as residing within ourselves, we project the feeling of an enemy on other people, countries, ideologies, etc.... of course there is no enemy.. the problem is just that we forgot that this being we identify with was created by our true selves..Most people choose to 'make a creature' which they call 'me' and try to make that creature as powerful as they can by giving it the correct opinions - the most 'beautiful' characteristics in the eyes of others. Yet this is only an image - just a substitute for the truth..' and, 'our lives are run to a large extent by what I call, 'the echo of expectation'. Our minds tell us what we should expect to experience - what is or is not possible to experience, as learned from our society. We then look to the world around us to see if any of those possible things are out there..."

He feels that the path to wholeness, balance, wellness, and harmony with the earth begins by stopping our identification with this false self, re-member-ing our body-mind once again. This is easier said than done, thus the need for methodologies such as Tai Chi.

Adopting a pantheistic perspective, Mr. Klein also shares some important insights about consciousness, awareness, and creativity. He believes that individuals do not own their awareness, or even their intelligence. Instead, awareness is immanent in creation. A few quotes of Mr. Klein captures his thoughts on awareness, intelligence, and creativity:

"...You also understand that attention is not owned by you; it is the life-blood of the earth that flows through you and is used by all creatures, as blood nourishes all the cells of the body... If you identify attention as yourself, you may be afraid to let it go.."

"...within our bodies, cellular intelligence is a result of the evolution of communication systems the same is true on a planetary level. Intelligence is achieved by opening communications not only among people but also among all parts of the earth. Intelligence then, is a matter of connection and attention is what connects us.."

"...intelligence is not something generated by yourself; it is an energy flowing through you from the heaven/earth flow of energy. It is like gravity, something you are aware of and can use.."

"..our intelligence flows from our true selves, which is not individualistic at its deepest level. Rather we are all emanations of a unified creative force, just as each part of our experience is really part of us as a whole individual.."

In conclusion, there is a lot to contemplate in 'Movements of Power,' and this short review cannot do justice to all of the themes discussed. Yet, what I liked most about this book is that Mr. Klein tells us readers in plain and simple language what the path toward whole-ness is and how Tai Chi practice leads us there. Finally, he clarifies issues of health and spirituality, providing us with important insights to reflect upon.

Very insightful. I had read "Movements of Magic," an earlier book by this author, and in it he promised to discuss something more thoroughly in his next book (this one, Movements of Power). So I had to wait until he finished writing it. Even though I didn't check back quicker to see that the book had been written, when I did, just now, I ordered it promptly. The author delivered. He covered the topic I was interested in. And reading and studying it helped me to address something I was struggling with in my life. Now I struggle no more, so I can check that off my bucket list!
