Comment about previous reviews: there are ample warnings in the book about resting between sets (Lt. Smith does make recommendations but also tells readers to take as much time as they need); Lt. Smith gives the reader *choices* and *alternatives* frequently; the only point without compromise is showing up and giving a full effort. I think that's the strongest part of the book.
The other reviews that augment the warnings in the book are dead-on. These workouts are serious challenges to anyone, triathletes and boxers included. Having said that, it's possibly the best workout you can do without weights.
If you can't pass the initial test and the 4 week beginner program is still too hard, halve it (make it 8 weeks, do half the work the first 4 weeks and take a week of active 'rest').
Overall, Lt. Smith sets a high standard for fitness with these workouts, but after reading other reviews, I bought it and will tell you myself: he lays out more than one map to these lofty goals, and his writing encourages you to try and keep trying. I found that to be the difference between this book and any other fitness book. I came away inspired, not intimidated.

Buy this book.

It offers two workout programs - a 4-week introductory workout program to the 12-week BUD/s preparation workout. Like other reviewers point out, this book is meant for people that are already in good shape because it is meant to prepare prospective BUD/s students. Both the 4-week and 12-week exercise programs are fantastic. They require dedication as well as intestinal fortitude in order to reap the benefits. Make no mistake - it is difficult.

The companion DVD is also good. Stew Smith visually demonstrates every stretch and exercise that is in the book. It's nice to have, but don't worry if you find a used copy of the book without the DVD.

You will need to have access to a swimming pool in order to complete the workouts. A large part of the swimming program requies fins. If you want to be a SEAL, follow through with this and purchase fins. If you simply want to be in incredible shape, just skip the fins and complete the swimming.

There is no weight training in this book. After careful analysis of the entire exercise program, I can see why - if you can complete the 4-week and 12-week programs, you will be stronger than ever.

This is the best exercise book I have ever bought.

Bob and Jillian have nothing on this guy! He should be a trainer on the Biggest Loser. This workout is the hardest I have ever put myself through. While I may not be "SEAL" material, this series of workouts will challenge people of all levels. The included DVD will take all of the guess work out of what the proper form should be. This is especially useful in the swimming section as some of the SEAL swimming techniques were different for me. The workouts are changed weekly to keep your body guessing, which make it really challenging. For full effect though, you really do need access to a swimming pool. The gym I belong to now doesnt have one. But this is by far the best workout for the price!

This is a wonderful book, second only to the same author's Maximum Fitness. It presents an extremely rigorous and effective fitness program that uses no weights. The program provides a lot of variety and the workouts are fun. They are also very, very difficult. But if you stick with the program you are going to see some pretty stunning results, both physical and mental. And that's a promise.
A bonus is that you will laugh out loud several times when you first read through the exercises and when you read about what real Navy Seal training is like.
After running through this program a couple times, anything will seem possible to you. That's something you can't put a price on, and I think that Stewart Smith has done us a great service by writing this book.

Figured I'd pick this book up to get in better shape all around and balanced. Cant review the DVD since mine was used and didn't have it anymore, but cant complain. Will update later on the training routines I try out if need be.

- This book is really helpful, Goes over all the basics and a very detailed 12 week prgm day by day already planned. Goes over just about everything you need to know, so will be adding his workouts to my current.

This book is the best book I have ever read about physical fitness. It not only tells you how to do all the exercizes, it gives you a 12 week program that really works. There is also a 4 week program for begginners to get ready for the 12 week. I did the program over the summer and I can really tell the difference. You'll be able to do alot more push ups, sit ups, dips, and pull ups then you were able to do before. It also has a great arobics program with it.

Who needs weights? Stew Smith shows that a great body can be built without even touching a weight. However, his workouts are tough. I am still working in the beginner 4 week routine because I can't even qualify for the PFT. It is very easy for me to do the workouts because I live 5 minutes from the Virginia Tech campus, so I have ready access to an assisted pull up/dip machine and a pool. If you don't have a pool don't worry you can substitute a tough cadio workout for it. This is my second week through the 4 week program and my arms look bigger but I think they are just more cut. I definitely recommend this book to anyone training for a marathon or just wanting to get into extreme shape.
I'm still working up to the 12 week workout, and am in the best shape of my life. I played college football, and was never in this kind of shape!!
LT Smith has revealed a way to get in the kind of shape that is hard to imagine looking back.
I've lost 20 lbs, can do over 200 pushups (in a workout) in about 5 weeks of applying just the beginning phases of his workout.
I can't wait for the rest.
