Nearly 140 comprehensive illustrations show the proper techniques for medical care, from basic first-aid and orthopedics to instructions for emergency war surgery and even veterinary medicine. The Office of the Surgeon, John F. Kennedy Center for Military Assistance published the first Special Forces Medical Specialist Handbook in January 1969. It has a red cover and I have the only copy that I have seen in years.

MARSOC, as the US Marine Corps Special Operations Command is known, is the youngest component of USSOCOM. Although MARSOC can trace a lineage to the Raiders of World War II, it was not officially established until 2006. As the smallest component of USSOCOM, there are 700-800 Critical Skill Operators within MARSOC and approximately 3,000 members make up the USMC Special Operations community.

A comprehensive reference designed for Special Operations Forces (SOF) medics. Developed as a primary medical information resource and field guide for the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) medics, the Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook defines the standard of health care delivery under adverse and general field conditions. It is organized according to symptoms, organ systems, specialty areas, operational environments and procedures. It emphasizes acute care in all its forms (gynecology, general medicine, dentistry, poisonings, infestations, parasitic infections, acute infections, hyper and hypothermia, high altitude, aerospace, and dive medicine, and much, much more) as well as veterinary medicine and sanitation practice under primitive conditions. It is the work of over 130 contributors and 57 reviewers from both the military and civilian practice. Topics are covered in a consistent subjective/objective/assessment/plan (SOAP) format. It is heavily illustrated with color for quick identification of dermatologic conditions, insect bites and stings and exposure problems. The second edition contains updated and expanded material from the 2001 release, including Pediatrics, Nursing, and ENT Problems.  Printed on tear-resistant, water-resistant synthetic paper. A 5.25 inch by 8.5 inch quick-reference guide with a three hole punched ring binding. It includes 193 figures (37 in color) and 38 quick reference tables.

This version is the official military issue handbook, second edition, and is printed by the U.S. Government printing office with bar code affixed. The covers are heavily laminated and it's 750 pages are held together by three inadequate clip rings. As with the original version, I replaced the clip rings with nylon 550 parachute cord. It's format (5.5" by 8.5")is larger than it's predecessor (4.5" by 7.0") and is printed on a slightly less weather proof paper than the first edition. This larger format is a bit more awkward to carry in a tactical environment, but easily fits into a gallon ziploc bag . Although Amazon's price is identical to the GPO's, I prefer Amazon's hassle free ordering. This handbook is the Special Operations Forces Medical Bible. Its 130 subject matter expert contributors cover all facets of field, survival and emergency medicine. I highly recommend this handbook to those seeking a comprehensive, but easily understood, medical manual. It covers every topic from dentistry to veterinarian medicine. It is the must have medical reference if no doctor or medical providers are available.
Incidentally, the GPO offers this manual on CD-ROM for $6.25.

This "Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" is the Second Edition, published in November 2008. My copy has a laminated cover and is held together with three rings, which is useful for keeping the book open to needed section.

While this is very comprehensive book is written for an audience with formal medical training, there are many sections that are useful and understandable for the layman. Chapter 8 is particularity interesting to me since it covers surgical and wound care procedures that are not covered well in other survival books we own.

This is going into my family emergency kit and truly hope that it never comes out of the vacuum sealed bag we are storing it in. Since the type is sort of small for my aging eyes, we have also packed a magnifier with the book.

Recommended!

I've always felt that every citizen should have access to medical care. Outside of the advanced nations medical care is spotty. This medical handbook is that--a handy medical reference for doctors, nurses, paramedics, or those interested in the human condition throughout the globe. A concise read for viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases, with pictures, charts and graphic instructions for many conditions, every medical personnel working outside major metropolitan areas should have one. This is one publication that will definitly save lives and improve badly needed medical aid for the sick. Every field hospital can use the information contained in
this book. [I'm willing to bet that I obtained a genuine U.S.Government Printing Office copy. It is a fine book in my estimation.]

The description says "Printed on tear-resistant, water-resistant synthetic paper." It is not. The book I received was printed on regular paper from scans or photocopies of the original and bound by rings with front and back covers made of laminated color copies of the front and rear pages. The inside pages are all cheap black and white regular paper.

I am a former SOF medic, and I have copies of the first edition of this book that are wonderful: printed on Tyvek paper that is rainproof and durable. Don't get me wrong: the content of the book is excellent and better than anything else you will find on the topic (but it is not written for an amateur, you need to have some medical training to make full use of it). I was more than willing to pay $60 for the updated 2008 version of this reference that you can take with you into the field under the worst of conditions. Unfortunately this was a photocopied rip-off, and not the real thing or as described. Buyer beware.

I hope i don't need to use it but it seems to be very complete and useful, and the illustrations are very helpful, clear and well done.
But, as Mark Moodie says in his previous review: "The description says "Printed on tear-resistant, water-resistant synthetic paper." It is not. The book I received was printed on regular paper from scans or photocopies of the original and bound by rings with front and back covers made of laminated color copies of the front and rear pages. The inside pages are all cheap black and white regular paper."
I also had the same version... just a laminated cover, everything else is just paper.
