Gustav Theodor Fechner was born in a small village at Gross-Särchen, Prussia .

Gustav Theodor Fechner was born in a small village at Gross-Särchen, Prussia (Germany). The son of a Lutheran pastor, he was taught Latin from the age of five years. In 1850 Fechner experienced a flash of insight about the nature of the connection between mind and body. Based on this insight he created psychophysics-the study of the relationship between stimulus intensity and subjective experience of the stimulus. He published numerous papers in the fields of chemistry and physics, and translated works of Jean-Baptiste Biot and Louis-Jacques Thénard from French.

A study of Apparent Motion (AM) of Gamma type is presented which extends previous findings (Geissler, Schebera & Kompass 1999) showing that a temporal parameter (ISI), critical for the perceptual transition AM - flicker, exhibits discrete timing

Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) was a German physicist, psychologist, and philosopher, best known to historians of science as the founder of psychophysics, the experimental study of the relation between mental and physical processes.

Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) was a German physicist, psychologist, and philosopher, best known to historians of science as the founder of psychophysics, the experimental study of the relation between mental and physical processes. Michael Heidelberger's exhaustive exploration of Fechner's writings, in relation to current issues in the field, successfully reestablishes Fechner's place in the history and philosophy of science.

This paper sets out some of the central concepts, theses and the historical background of ideas that inform this doctrine of elements ) considers recent neo-Russellian versions in the second half. One tradition is statistical, stretching from Fechner's enunciation of psychophysics in 1860 to the modern view of perception as statistical decision making. The other tradition is phenomenological, from Brentano's empirical standpoint of 1874 to the Gestalt movement and the modern work on perceptual organization.

Despite Fechner's universal fame as the founder of psychophysics, his work is not very well known among contemporary psycholgists. Toward a resolution of the Fechner-Thurstone legacy. Psychometrika, 26, 35–47. Stevens, S. S. (1975).
