Hibbert tried to be fair, portraying both the native Africans and the Europeans with This book covers the exploration of Africa by European explorers, covering over 100 years. I have mixed feelings about the book, so I'll try to explain why. First, I liked the format.

I am truly glad that I chose to read this book. The author distills complicated and seemingly unrelated events into a well-told story bound together by common threads of courage and stupidity, insight and cultural blindness, adventure and colossal boredom.

I have read much more detailed accounts of much of what is covered here, but this is the best comprehensive account of two centuries of exploration of the "Dark Continent". I had reservations about a book that tried to do this job in only 300 pages, but the author pleasantly surprised me with an extremely interesting, fast paced, and fact laced tale.

Usually, books on the exploration of Africa (especially more recent ones) intentionally ignore those portions of accounts that are politically incorrect or culturally shocking to the Western mind. One of the intriguing techniques used in this book is to focus sometimes on these elements without being "trashy".

For example, Africa Explored includes quotes that (though in indirect Victorian language) express an altogether too interested outrage at African sexual practices. Or disgust at eating habits, brutality, slavery and religious beliefs. Yet the peoples who are described had adapted to and were thriving in an environment that crippled , killed and dismayed the European explores and critics.

Africa Explored also includes an abundance of maps, with the result that to tales told are easily followed.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in exploration and other cultures. The reader will find himself noting that many of the experiences and observations of these explorers find echoes and shadows in modern Africa.
