A letter of marque and reprisal (French: lettre de marque; lettre de course) was a government license in the Age of Sail that authorized a private person, known as a privateer or corsair, to attack and capture vessels of a nation at war with the issuer. Once captured, the privateer could then bring the case of that prize before their own admiralty court for condemnation and transfer of ownership to the privateer.

This book is a waste of time and money.

Good read, good history.

This book, though written in 1928, or perhaps because it was, displays the perspectives of the era. Much of the book was, understandably, written from a southern viewpoint common to the time. There simply are few other resources as reliable as this one for detailed information on the subject. A modern book written on the subject would find it neccesary to refer frequently to this book, or the sources outlined within. If you are a SERIOUS researcher, don't overlook this.

I read this book four years ago in preparation for a graduate history seminar. It was so poorly researched and filled with over-wrought prose that I told the class as a work of history it was near worthless. The pro-Southern, Lost Cause mentality of the author taints every statement. The book was written back in the 1920s and it shows. The topic is a fascinating one and a new, well-researched, and balanced account of the last privateers would be welcome by scholars and history buffs. This book is a waste of time and money.
