A book-signing and program on Sam Houston will be held at the Panola College . Baker Library on Tuesday, March 1, at noon, as part of the Lunch Box Lecture Series. On March 2, I will celebrate the 180th anniversary of Texas Independence Day in Downtown Dallas at the Texas A&M Commerce Center presenting a lecture on Sam Houston to premier their Mini Lecture Series. Houston was appointed commander-in-chief of the Provisional Army of Texas, and accepted the surrender of Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna following the Battle of San Jacinto. Twice elected as President of the Republic of Texas, Houston eventually favored annexation to the United States. Afterwards he represented Texas in the United States Senate and was elected the 7th Governor of Texas.
