This is a pleasant-to-read series of presentations, making up a friendly conversation on how it's been with Canadian ranchers, who they've been, and how they've differed from American cowboys. I enjoyed the parts on ranch women and Aboriginal or Metis cattlemen. There's also a good bit on the role of ranchers as publicists and artists, presenting their culture to the world through trail-side paintings, and especially through putting on exhibitions and Wild West shows. And here a difference in legends emerges, as the American Wild West shows tended to dramatize a myth of glorious conquest, while the Canadian shows emphasized the display of fancy cowboy skills. As the authors explain, the Canadian West was considerably more lawless, violent, sexist and racist than we like to recall, but the legend spinners put a civilized spin on that.

The book focuses heavily on individual ranchers as people, with not so much on their animals. I wanted to see more about the shifts over time in how ranchers have treated animals and the land.
