Buffalo Bill Cody was born on a farm in Scott county, Indiana, on 26th February 1846. In those days, life in the American West was a constant struggle for survival, and Indians and white pioneers would fight to the death to protect their homes and their people. Before the age of twenty, Bill left home and took a job with the Pony Express company, and very soon he became reputed as one of their best riders. It was the time when the West was being opened up. After the Pony Express, Bill got a job supplying buffalo meat to the men building the Kansas Pacific rail- road. In the space of 17 months, he claims to have killed 4,280 buffaloes.

Buffalo Bill, who rode for the Pony Express, fought in the American Civil War, and served as a scout for the Army, also created a Wild West show that toured the United States and Europe. Lakota Sioux chief Sitting Bull was part of the cast for four months in 1885, and since then, they had created a strange friendship. In other words, he was under arrest. Cody had just returned from a European tour of his Wild West show. He was scheduled to testify before Congress, which wanted to shut down his Wild West show.

This book is comprised of letters sent home by Buffalo Bill Cody from his days on the stages of America with the Buffalo Bill Combination and from the later Wild West venues in America and Europe. The letters are full of his hopes and wishes for the folks he loved at home. Most of the letters were sent to his eldest sister Julia, his mother/sister for whom he built a house and later made manager of his second hotel in Wyoming, the Irma Hotel in Cody. The letters detail the work to be done on his Scout's Rest Ranch in North Platte, Nebraska. How he wants his home there built and details on the huge barn there, There are the hopes for his short-lived artificial coffee venture with Dr. Frank "White Beaver" Powell and the hopes for great wealth to come from his investment in a mine in Arizona that never panned out. The reader can learn how tiring it was for him to be on the road day after day doing one day stands in town after town, especially when he was in his sixties and working for a shabby circus. It was also great to find this book at a great price. I have seen copies selling for four times as much.
Love this book. I read it while on vacation in Yellowstone and was pleased to find it on Amazon. It arrived in excellent condition exactly as mentioned in the ad on Amazon.
