William J. Cooper, Jr. is the Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University. Thomas E. Terrill is emeritus professor of history at the University of South Carolina.

William J. Cooper and Thomas E. Terrill have written perhaps the best modern survey of the Old South. The book also contains helpful maps and an incredible bibliographical essay that uncovered so many other works for me to read. As a Southerner and a PhD student in history, I'm exceedingly aware that the Old South is deeply controversial in the post-1960s climate. One person found this helpful. It's very difficult to find a balanced telling, as most tend towards an unscholarly negative bias and sense of righteous indignation.
