On Easter Monday, between 1,000 and 1,500 Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin. The intention of their leaders, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, was to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent thirty-two county Irish republic. The rebel leaders were executed soon afterwards, though in death their ideals quickly triumphed.

Countering the argument that radical socialist James Connoly of the Irish Citizen Army and the leaders of the Irish Republican Brotherhood expected a defeat (and were motivated by a desire to provide a "blood sacrifice") in the 1916 Easter Rising against the British, Foy (history, The Methodist College, Belfast) and Barton (Queen's U., Belfast) present a chronological account of the uprising and its aftermath, including the trials and executions of many of the leaders of the Brotherhood. The book provides a thorough examination of the Rising looking at each center of activity individually. My only complaint is that it does not then give one a look at the overall event - how the various locations were linked and worked both together and separately. And because of the way the areas are treated individually, it can seem repetitive. But given this, it provides great insight into both the Rebel's and the British thinking.

This was a very comprehensive work about the Easter Rising. It is told in a manner that puts the reader into the history. It is one of the best books I have read about this period of Irish history.
Fast Lovebird
Greatly enjoyed the abundance of detail interwoven into the clearly detailed chronicle.

Barton and Foy have produced one of the definitive sources on the Easter Uprising of 1916. This is an impartial and well-researched examination of the events and persons associated with this great event in Irish history. I can think of few other books that can rival Barton and Foy's Easter Rising for historical detail and broad scope- two things that are rarely done well together. For the history buff it is readable and interesting; the researcher will be pleased with the footnotes, detailed index and wonderful original testimony from participants that is not often found in the common sources. The authors do not seek to praise heroes, but to examine history- something they do quite well.
