Sheila Hardy was a homemaker before becoming a full-time writer. She has written several biographies of notable women, including An Admirable Wife and The Real Mrs Beeton. I thought this rather brief book was an interesting take on British housewives in the 1950s, with some useful background on how and where "nice girls met nice guys" and then fulfilled The Dream by getting married. Much of this work can be interpolated onto Middle America-or indeed most of America-during the same period without too great an effort.

A 1950s Housewife: Marriage and Homemaking in the 1950s. Being a housewife in the 1950s was quite a different experience to today. After the independence of the wartime years, women had to leave their jobs when they married and support their husband by creating a spotless home, delicious meals and an inviting bedroom. A 1950s Housewife collects heart-warming personal anecdotes from women who embarked on married life during this fascinating post-war period, providing a trip down memory lane for any wife or child of the 1950s.

A really sweet book that provides a snapshot into a time passed when homemaking was the norm for women. As a SAHM I really appreciated the viewpoints of the those who took pride in their homes and their families. I do not romanticize the past and recognize how far women have come since the 50s, but this is a beautiful look into a time that has passed. An enjoyable quick read.

I thought this rather brief book was an interesting take on British housewives in the 1950s, with some useful background on how and where "nice girls met nice guys" and then fulfilled The Dream by getting married.

Much of this work can be interpolated onto Middle America--or indeed most of America--during the same period without too great an effort. And that's scary, I think: that back in a day I can remember perfectly women were expected to lead--and in fact led--such stultifying and circumscribed lives. But my mother thought it was all just so peachy that she wanted the same life for me: "Go to college, dear, join a sorority, major in primary education, and find a husband. Teach children for a couple of years until you have children of your own."

Even if this book raises your liberated hackles, I think it is nevertheless worth a read as a glimpse into a past many of us remember or into a bit of history for others whose parents are too young to recall what is still referred to as "The Best Years of Our Lives," and might well wish to have return.

But not me, folks. Thanks be to all that is holy--or unholy--I refused to follow that predestined path my parents had laid out.

I love the period of the 1950s so this was a fun read all about the every day life of a woman, wife and mother in those days. Quite a bit of fun information on housekeeping, meal planning, fashion, and leisure of the era.

Eh. I was a little disappointed to be honest. It's about the 1950's British housewife, which is fine. But I just expected it to be about life for an American housewife. It's also a small paperback that I'd pay less for because of the quality of the book.

Very disappointing. I think there was only one interesting chapter. It claims to have stories from real housewives of the time period but it was just a bunch of boring historical facts. I couldn't even read the whole thing.

I did not realize this was written by a British woman living in Britain. Some things I could identify with but a lot I could not.
Cute book, I needed it to write a financial essay about Britain's recovering economy after WWII. Easy and interesting read.
