Very good book! Besides the traditional well-known fighters and bombers that one would expect to find in a book like this, it also includes cargo planes, liaison and reconnaissance planes, trainers, target drones, target tugs, flying boats, seaplanes, various utility planes, and gliders. I am well past the point of needing more information on the famous RAF planes of WW II such as the “Spitfire,” ”Hurricane,” “Lancaster,” Mosquito,”, “Wellington,” or “Typhoon.” This book includes less renowned airplanes such as the Miles, Airspeed, Percival, and de Havilland trainers and communications / liaison aircraft and light transports. The book also includes a few of the design failures that never made it into production, prototypes that were too late for the war or were just never placed into production for whatever reason, or were only produced in small numbers. Some examples are: Armstrong Whitworth “Albemarle,” Bristol “Buckingham,” Bristol “Buckmaster,” Bristol “Brigand,” and Supermarine “Spiteful.”

Finally, the book includes airplanes of the 1920s and early 1930s that were still used, at least early in the war.

Each airplane is typically described with a specification of dimensions, power plant, weights, and armament. A short 1/2 to 2 or 3 page text discusses development, operation and deployment. The more famous airplanes receive the most descriptive text (not too surprisingly, I suppose).

Several books that contain more information on the British WW II aircraft designs are:

• "British Warplanes of World War II” by March (1998). This book includes American airplane types that were used by the British;

• "British Experimental Combat Aircraft of World War II – Prototypes, Research Aircraft and Failed Production Designs" by Buttler (2012). This a GREAT book on British airplanes that few people have ever heard of;

• “ RAF Bomber Command and its Aircraft 1936 – 1940” by Goulding and Moyes (1975);

• “The Encyclopedia of British Military Aircraft” by Bowyer (1982). This book offers only very brief dimensional and performance data on the aircraft covered from about 1912 through 1982.

This book has words, useful words! Not only are all the regular Aircraft are covered but a lot of minor aircraft types as well as those developed that did not see production runs. I was surprised at the number of what I thought were "between wars" types that entered the early days of the conflict. Useful production and operational histories are provided along with specifications. Three view drawings are supplemented by Profiles and colour photos. My only lament, and it is a small one, is that even though types like the Biistol Bollingbroke and DAP Beaufort/Beaufighter are mentioned British Commonwealth designs such as the CAC Boomerang, Wacket, CA15 and Woomera are not.

I also recommend "The Hamlyn Concise Guide to American Aircraft of World War II" but have not yet seen the Axis volume.
Best since William Green's 10 volume effort.

The book is really good lots of color profiles and information very useful for a modeller and in a way for somebody that would like to. Know some of the history of the aircraft in question in other words I liked it very satisfied with it. And I highly recommend it.

Not just technical details, not just wonderful color plates, this book is the best of both worlds.
