This young crewman of a US Navy Dumbo PBY rescue mission has just jumped into the water of Rabaul Harbor to rescue a badly burned Marine pilot who was shot down while bombing the Japanese-held fortress of Rabaul. Since Japanese coastal defense guns were firing at the plane while it was in the water during take-off, this brave young man, after rescuing the pilot, manned his position as machine gunner without taking time to put on his clothes. It's a compendium. Just a few PBY WAR STORIES; HOWEVER; page 139 has THE REVELATION on Pearl Harbor. It's the REVELATION never heard before on 77 years of PUBLIC P.H. DOCUMENTARIES. It's the 'dope' on Washington DC's 'unforced error' in the 3 mos leading up to Dec 7th.
It's the explanation of: WHERE WERE OUR SCOUTS (Reconaisance) ? When our lead Admiral, of Patrol Wing II, Hawaii, IN SEP '41, describes the situation as; "The Hottest Spot in the Navy". HE refused a direct order AND begged not to have our 360 degr. 2/day RECON PATROL SCHEDULE stopped.
yet; WASHINGTON repeated AND insisted. IN 60 DAYS, RECONAISANCE WENT FROM 360 DEGR 24 HOUR TO '0'.

This was a great book because it was written from the perspective of those that flew it. Almost like you were talking to a group of aircrew members that flew them in person. Very well done and lots of excellent mission stories.

A glimpse into the life of the WWII PBY pilot. This book hit home for me as the writer had very similar WWII experiences in the 'black cat' that my did. One of the best histories of the Catalina's I've ever read. Talks about not just the pilots but about the missions they performed in these planes. Excellent book!

A great book about a great plane and the unsung heroes who flew and manned them. The book presents an in-depth look at a vital part of the navy that is rarely considered in WWII combat discussions. You will find the book hard to put down.

For students of WWII, a good read to round out one's knowledge of the Navy's amphibious aircraft part of the war.
This book was written by a PBY Catalina pilot who served in World War 2. This edition has been updated by the original author's eldest son. It consists of segments of interviews with PBY pilots and crews, and gives a very good insight into the activities that the airman undertook from those airmen's points of view.
Whilst the book covers PBY operations undertaken by all the allied forces all over the globe, there is a heavy emphasis on the south west Pacific theatre of the war. This does not diminish the book's two predominant themes: 1) the PBY Catalina was a very robust aircraft that performed far beyond its original design specifications; and, 2) the men who operated these aircraft in a time of conflict were very capable people whom were devoted to a cause.
It is a great read.
