When it comes to World War II in the Pacific, and specifically the role of the U.S. Marines, you would be hard-pressed to find a better authority than Eric Hammel. Having read all his other photographic collections of the Marines in World War II, this is by far the best. The pictures are fantastic and complement the narrative perfectly. Of course, it certainly helped that by this stage of World War II the Marines were dedicating much more effort into capturing their island campaigns on film.

From the planning stages through the final capture of the island, this book covers it all. War is never pretty and several of the images are very graphic in nature. There are some great photos of actual combat, and the iconic flag-raising is covered with several extra images you probably haven't seen published before, or at least very often. There are also several color photographs at the end of the book showing what Iwo Jima looks like 60 years after the battle. There were 27 Medals of Honor awarded to participants in the battle, and each medal citation and a photo of the recipient are included in the book.

If you like the Marines, the Pacific Theatre of World War II, or you're just looking for an excellent book on the battle, this one is a must-have.

In reading this book and examining the photographs, I couldn't help but develop an eternal feeling for all those Marines who fought and died on that stinking piece of real estate. The photographs are awe inspiring by showing everyone the hell all those young Marines went through. I can't invision the kind of torture they suffered, not only from the terrain, but from the enemy entrenched in their caves, bunkers, and pillboxes. To be sujected to this kind of murderous ordeal truly shows the bravery and heroic actions by these Marines, and every American today should be damn thankful for the sacrifices people like they and others made for them. Everytime I saw the photos of dead Marines in this book I just literally cried. I have never seen some of these photos, and seeing these young Marines laying in the waste of black lava as their final resting spots really got to me. Some never had a chance, others died weeks later after hard fought combat, and some like three of the flag raisers on Suribachi, never got to enjoy the fame and glory of their action. This is a great book, a sad book, but a book every American should read and look at. Eric Hammel did a masterful job of writing and organizing this book, and he did proud justice to all those brave Marines who fought and died on Iwo Jima. I highly recommend this book.

This is another fine book in the series of pictorials that honor the fighting marine. There is also books that cover Guadalcanal, Tarawa, the Marshalls, New Guinea. They have many things in common. They're all large books, approximately 11 in by 10 in, have great pictures and convey the bravery and hardship our men went through during those campaigns. Another nice touch I like is Mr Hammel includes pictures of the men who were awarded the Medal of Honor and a description of his achievement.
Mr Hammel describes the 74 day bombardment of the island; our intelligence showed it would be well defended and tough to take but it had to be taken for it was located within B-29 range of the home islands of Japan.
The author gives a day by day account of the action and troubles our men went through on that small island. Its a moving story and with the great photos, you'll learn a lot about the battle. There are hundreds of photos; you'll see the raising of the flag, Mt Suribachi, the rugged terrain and many pictures of the battle action. There are many aerial photos of the island as well as from the sea that are breath taking.
I highly recommend it and its sister books.

I got this book because my grandfather landed on Iwo on the 3rd day and stayed for the duration. He never talked about the war. I vaguely knew he was in it but that was it. I have been searching the National Archives for information on his unit because it never seems to get mentioned anywhere. He was part of the 2nd Separate Engineering Battalion that rebuilt the main airfield, cleared a path up off the beach and collected dead bodies and body parts. This book is a great piece to have to supplement the military records I have found. Not to mention the great pictures and history of the battle. This is a well put together book and I really like it.
Fog
Fascinating book that tells the story of the battle for Iwo. But what is impressive is the outstanding pictures
throughout the book. I have read several book on Iwo Jima and thought I had seen most of the photographs.
I was wrong. This book provides a visual summary of the battle in a powerful manner. I highly recommend
to anyone with an interest in WW2.
Owomed
An outstanding photo album depicting the Battle of Iwo Jima. Excellent photography and very well put together. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this historic conflict.

My eighteen year old Uncle landed on February 19, 1945 and was killed on March 1. The photos in this book depict what these guys had to endure and what they had to do to stay alive.

This book is primarily a pictorial history of the battle. However the narrative is quite informative as well. I was a pre-teen during WWII and most of what I knew of the war was based on movies that for the most part centered on the glory rather than the gory. I have read numerous books on WWII as an adult that provided me with a clearer view of both the inherent heroism and the horrible waste of war. This book provides both aspects. It includes some descriptions of decisions made by named Navy admirals that the author states made the Marines task of taking Iwo Jima even more bloody.
good stuff...ya get a real great idea about the terrain...
