At Dawn We Slept book. Decades after the attack that plunged America into WWII, At Dawn.

Nevertheless, Pearl Harbor continues to be an inexhaustible source of articles, books, interviews, and even movie .

Nevertheless, Pearl Harbor continues to be an inexhaustible source of articles, books, interviews, and even movie specials. Unfortunately, many of these efforts have been centered around finding some American, most often Franklin D. Roosevelt, to hang. For the revisionist school is alive and well, as determined as ever to pin the responsibility for the tragedy at Pearl Harbor on the former president. An article published after At Dawn We Slept reveals that Hoover received the request for information from Popov, but when he sent the information on to Roosevelt he deleted all reference to Pearl Harbor.

It's a great history of the attack on World War II. It was actually written after Prange's death by Donald Goldstein based on Prange's research. The book's biggest weakness is that it criticizes Adm. Kimmel, the Pearl Harbor Commanding Officer for not conducting search flights to the north of Pearl Harbor before the attacks. The problem Kimmel faced was that he did not have the aircraft for a systematic search.

Even so, it is an excellent read for anyone serious interested in the attack. I would reccommend "A Matter of Honor" after reading this book for a really full view of events leading up to the attack.

Not a book to sit and read for pleasure, but very informative. It gives a very clear perspective from both the Japanese and American views leading up to the attack, the attack itself, and its' aftermath. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in WWII history or the history of Japan itself.

The ultimate chronicle, written by a man with no ax to grind.Prange was an expert on Europe and fluent in German,so he was of course, ordered to Japan. While there,he decided to study the attack, and interviewed key players on both sides. The events of that day hit home for me on a personal level, because I have in my collection a navy death notification telegram for a sailor killed on that day.Sobering.

Gordon Prange, wrote one of the best histories of how we, through our shortsightedness, and our beliefs in the ocean borders, allowed ourselves to be drawn into the Second World War through our unpreparedness. It is not the first time, nor will it likely be the last time, when our complacency allows our enemies to take advantage of our inattention and unpreparedness. Having known many men and women who served in World War Two in our Armed Forces, and many of their grand children and great grandchildren who serve today, it is their willingness to stand ready, to fight when called, and to die when absolutely necessary, that we have our freedoms and rights that we enjoy today. Read this book, then thank a WWII, Korean, Vietnam or Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom Warrior, for what they have done and are doing to protect you and your family.... With this book you will realize that complacency is the fuel that will fire our destruction....

What else would one expect from a book in which someone has devoted most of his professional life. I believe that this book covers everything that is known about matters preceding, occuring, and following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Barrinng the revelation of some unknown source of information, "At Dawn We Slept" puts to rest all myths and misconceptions surrounding the infamous raid.

It is not just a history. It is a lesson about life: communication is vital to survival of the individual and to the group. This seems to be the foundational theme of Gordon Prange's work. Verify that your superiors truely understand what you are doing and verify that you truely understand what your subordinates are doing. Several thousand miles of seperation can allow experienced, competent leaders to misinterpret vital information with fatal results.

This book gives a very good, indepth, detailed description of the I.J.N.A.S. attack on Hawaii 7 December 1941. However, if one is looking for the intelligence and intepretation of intelligence by the U.S.N. before the attack on Pearl Harbor I felt this book misses a lot. For instance I gained the impression that the author "dismisses the Wind Codes messages", and I feel there are indications that there is a lot of the pre-Pearl Harbor attack intelligence "just not there."

Very detailed and sometimes hard to read but gives a better view of what was going on on both sides of the battle and how nieve the US was to what was happening in the world at that time.
This book and the Miracle at Midway by the same author are excellent for fact and story telling. I had an uncle-in-law at Pearl Harbor who saw the original attack from a hotel window on Oahu. He says the facts are verified.
