It is THE BOOK on the fledgling American Air Service, and having been a WWII fighter pilot, Hudson wrote from a pilot's point of view, and was able to discuss the salient points and the bad points of the experiences that these men had and how it shaped the future of our air force. I strongly recommend it to any serious military student. Covered are Americans who flew with the French and British air services, . If you have an interest in World War 1 American pilots, the aircorps, or balloon service, this is the book for you. It even includes copies of the rosters of each US squadrons - so you can find relatives or identify relics to the original owner. Well worth the money to me.

Produced by the Schiffer stable of magnificent books on military history tells the saga of The United States airmen serving in France, Belgium, Great Britain, and Italy 1914-1918. The work is complemented by a detailed chronological account of the development of military aviation and air bases in the United States Printed on high quality heavy art paper. 460 pages (4-page bibliography and 28-page index of individual personnel) copiously illustrated with portraits of the airmen involved and the aircraft they flew. Detail of the squadrons including the Balloon Detachments, in which the men served are given in tabular form and include the rosta of individual personel. This is a superbly written testament to the service and in many cases, sacrifice, of the United States flyers during the tragic events of 1914-1918.

Overall an excellent and interesting history of WWI aviation, units involved, missions, and military aviation personnel who pioneered aerial combat and other uses of the airplane. A good source of information on units involved. However, there are errors and omissions the detract from the overall accuracy of the book. For example, pilot Harold E. Loud who was killed in action is listed in the book on page 160 as Henry E. Loud with dates of service 9-9-18/9-20-18 KIA 9-20-18. The American Battle Monuments commission lists his death date as 9-28-18 and a historical document of his 88th Aero Squadron unit apparently written by the Headquarters 88th Aero Squadron, American Expeditionary Forces, lists him as a casualty under Officers, Killed in action with a date of 9-28-18 but adds that he died of burns the following day. Under Officers, Wounded in action, Captain Charles T. Trickey, who was the observer in the plane flown by Harold E. Loud, is listed with a date of 9-28-18. Whether Lieutenant Harold E. Loud died on the 28th or the 29th of September, the book seems to have the wrong date. Anyone doing historical research is cautioned to look for other source material to verify dates/names etcetera that are noted in this book.

This is a tremendous and rare book filled with fascinating historic details concerning the rarely mentioned airmen of WWI. Names, dates, squadrons and many details along with numerous photos truly bring the air war of WWI to life. Well worth the price for history war buffs or for anyone with ancestors, who participated in WWI. I was delighted to find my great uncle in the book !!
