Start by marking The Quest History and Meaning in Religion as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. In this collection of essays, Mircea Eliade stresses the cultural function that a study of the history of religions can play in a secularized society. The volume is divided into three sections: phenomenological and methodological studies; historical studies; and literary studies. The ideas are fragmented in this book and honestly, it's probably not for the interested layman. However, I did enjoy the few chapters on the mythological conceptions of the idea of America.

In "The Quest" Eliade gave us a summary from his vantage point of the development of the academic discipline of comparative religions, from about 1900 through say 1970. In summarizing trends of thought, he provides what looks to my eyes like a fairly thorough literature review. That makes for a very useful introductory survey for an amateur like me. A short, sweet and very informative read.

Excellent!!!

Excellent pre-conceptual analysis of the problem of history and its other, nonhuman time.

The title chapter of the book makes the book as a whole worth a good read through, especially if you are in or are influenced by the field of Religious Studies. Already in the 1960's, Eliade was lamenting the over-specialization running rampant in many humanities fields which tended to make research about little more than an exercise in pointing out random curiosities rather than contributing to the ongoing cultural discourse of our own society. If you've ever felt like academia has grown too detached and irrelevant in recent decades, you'll find a kindred spirit in Eliade.
