I downloaded this book because it was listed in a search for author "Mary Stewart". I didn't recognize the title and thought it was a book by Mary Stewart who wrote Nine Coaches Waiting, Ivy Tree, Airs Above the Ground, etc. I didn't notice that it in fact WASN'T the Mary Stewart I was looking for who wrote it. This book is not to my liking and is nothing like the author I was looking for.

This book was written in 1908, a fact which is important to understanding the references and phrasing of the tale. This is not the Mary Stewart who crafted such riveting suspense novels, but an earlier American author of the same name. This is a story of love, told from several different viewpoints, through many permutations. However, it is not a typical "love story" -- it delves into the true-to-life way people evolve, both through the course of a young marriage as it weathers challenges, and through an intertwined tale of unmarried persons testing their way through new acquaintances. Although it is set against the social mores of the early 1900s, the philosophy in it still holds true. The story itself is strangely engrossing--you find that the fate of these characters matters to you. They come across as real people with a true depth of thought.

Mistook author and was really disappointed. Older book, kinda preachy, dull story and stuffy characters. Pretty dated. Not my cup of tea.

Nothing like expected. The Mary Stewart is ANOTHER Mary Stewart. This book is boring to me, because it is nothing like the Mary Stewart books I have read. So disappointed. I wish I could return it.
