Mar 20, 2018 Zyggy rated it it was amazing. This is a truly brilliant book and a must read for anyone with an interest in Anglo Saxon history. It is especially interesting if you have a love or loyalty to the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria. This book wasn't so much about Venerable Bede as it was the world around him. This book mostly discussed wars and feuds between local kings, the importance of monasteries to the Christianization of northern England, literacy and learning and ends with some brief mentioning of vikings. Overall, an easy, relaxing read.
