I had to rate this book based on coincidence alone, but it deserves a review. It is a quick and easy read and is filled with accounts as opposed to assumptions and opinions. Crazy coincidence though is that I got it because I have been playing a lot of AC Black Flag, which is full of pirates. As I am reading this book, turns out a lot of characters from the game, all but the main really, are real pirates and their characters are very similar to the accounts in this book. Then, crazier than that, I read it on my way to Williamsburg, VA where one of the historic buildings/prison held the pirates of Blackbeard. This book had that story of how the pirates were arrested. I just enjoyed the heck out of this book. It references being selections from a bigger book, which isn't free, but I will probably buy it based on these stories. The wording is a bit dated since it is time period accounts, but you learn quickly what they are saying.

Books like this must not be judged on literary value. This book throws some valuable light on piracy and makes clear that pirates were not the romantic figures that they sometimes are made out to be. It is apity that the author did not deal more thoroughly with the pirates which he discusses.
If you like history and books written in the 18th century then you will like this book. It is not a "nail biter" nor is it action packed. But the fact that it was written around 1720 makes it very interesting. It is a selection of short "stories" about various captains who were known to be pirates. But if you are looking for a complete story, this is not it.
This book is a good read for a pirate lover. It was written so long ago that it is a little different to read but is informative none the less. I enjoyed this book about the Pirates in days of old. Very informative and well written book. I would recommend this book about pirates to any pirate lover.
If you enjoy the nitty gritty of men at sea and find the details of 16-17th century piracy as intriguing as I do, this old book will fill lots of gaps and entertain you greatly. Writing style is historic and labored, but so authentic and credible. Not a shallow starter book on the era of piracy, but great for those of us who can't get enough.
a very interesting book on pirates
I may have had my expectations too high because I love reading about pirates, but in the end there wasn't anything that interesting in this book. Mostly the author talks about how the pirates got hanged; not very informative to their lives at sea.

If you really, really need a book about pirates, this one's not bad to skim through.
A list of various pirates, with no detail whatsoever. Names, places, times, not much else. Read a few pages, scanned a few more, deleted it.
