As countless people over the years, I have been a big fan of the movie "The Wizard of Oz" from the very first time that I watched it. This book goes into detail how the movie was made from the makeup, the costumes, the set design and the special effects. It was no easy task to make this movie as pictures in 1938 didn't have computers to aid them in special effects and most movies back then were still made in black and white. One of the things that really impressed me about this book was that it actually illustrates elaborate blue prints of several sets, including the colorful Munchkinland and the spooky Witch's tower room. There are also lots of pictures, trivia and tid bits that any Wizard of Oz fan would find really interesting.

There's also a whole section dedicated to Terry, the dog that played the part of Toto. This female two-year-old terrier was chosen after tests of hundreds of animals and inspection of photos of pet dogs from all over the U.S. She was owned by Carl Spitz, the leading trainer of movie dogs at that time and although she had acted in previous films with famous actors such as Shirley Temple and Spencer Tracy, just to name a few, she didn't become famous until she starred in the Wizard of Oz. As a matter of fact, after making this movie, she was regularly referred to as Toto instead of Terry. In the same section, there's also a list of movies in which Terry/Toto was in and her co-stars.

The movie came to be thanks to many talented people who tirelessly worked together as a team to painstakingly create something that had never been done before and it has been and will continue to be loved by fans all over the world, young and old. This book does justice in describing what it took to make this movie not just a reality but a timeless masterpiece.

This book truly exceeded my expectations. I found it so interesting that I had a hard time putting it down. It is a must for any Wizard of Oz fan. Run, don't walk to buy it while it's still in print and you don't have to spend a fortune, you'll be glad you did!

This book is amazing! It contains little known facts about the actors and the movie itself! I used some of the facts for a trivia outlay that we put in our lobby display. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

This charming book has a great number of interesting photos, both black and white and color, and a lot of good information on the making of the movie. My wife was involved in a competition at Saks Fifth Avenue, where she and other employees had to decorate high heel red shoes in a Wizard of Oz theme. She won with shoes made to resemble Toto, with pictures of an "alarmed Dorothy" inside. The shoes were covered in brown fur (with the heels remaining red), had black noses, and bushy tails. They were displayed on an acrylic base with the "at Saks" swirl logo (from the the Saks bags) made into the yellow brick road (via Photoshop). She won first place and the shoes were put on display in the store and this book set next to it, so customers coule peruse the pages and learn more about this American classic. The display was quite popular.
