No, it's not a tutorial. And no, it won't help you with the basics of video editing. But if you want a great "go to" guide for FC Pro 7, this is it. It's well organized with clear, concise steps on how to accomplish many of the functions in the program. I find it helpful because I use FCPro only occasionally and with such a feature rich program, it's easy (for me) to forget some of the procedures.

A+ FINAL CUT PRO BOOK! THANK YOU!

Clear and to the point. Focal Press always do a great job. A great reference if you are trying to find something out quickly. Pity though it's not available for the iPad!

When I purchased this book, I was a little worried about ordering something I needed as soon as possible because my class just started. This book came to me in just a couple days. It was sent to me very fast. I was really impressed.

First, it should be emphasized that this book is specifically geared to cover Final Cut Pro 7, the editor portion of Final Cut Studio. It does, out of necessity, touch on some of the other applications in the package--notably Compressor and Motion--but its primary focus is on getting you up, running, and comfortable with the editor.

I have a long-standing habit of reading instructional books and manuals long before I get my hands on the actual product, and Rick Young's book is the latest addition to that list. I have experience with Final Cut Express 4.0, and much of what Young covers is applicable to that product, so I felt pretty comfortable covering the material in text without getting a chance to go hands-on.

Young concentrates primarily on workflows, prefacing each with a description of why you will need to use the tool--and make no mistake, to use FCP effectively, you WILL need to use almost everything Young addresses, one way or another. There are a number of tools he skips over, yes, and he does so quite intentionally: when you're trying to get your feet wet with a product, the last thing you need to be worrying about is one of the more esoteric tools--no matter how powerful--that you won't be able to employ until you have a foundation of understanding and experience with the software.

The workflows are concise and include many full-color screenshots and interface excerpts so that you know exactly what to click and when. The only complaint I have about the formatting is that the process steps are often flowed around the images in a way that will occasionally split steps: you may complete a step only to find yourself searching a bit for the next one. Small complaint, really.

Another, less obvious "feature" I like is that the book is smaller than these sorts of technical books usually are: rather than having a big, clumsy book to balance while you're trying to work your way through the process, the more compact format of Young's book makes it easy to hold one-handed, or prop up between your keyboard and your monitor. For a guide book intended to help you learn hands-on processes, the importance of the book's ease of handling can't be overstated.

Definitely a worthwhile book to have when you're learning FCP7: in sharp contrast to many other Final Cut Studio technical guides, you won't find yourself drowning in an ocean of Too Much Information.

This is an excellent summary of the tools and techniques available to users of FCP7. There is no wasted time on technique or priniples of actual content. This book is strictly designed to show you how something is done in the program.

There are many guides available for FCP7 and although each one may have unique aspects, nearly everyone will give you the information you need to perform a certain operation if you are able to find the information in the book itself. The actual user's manual from the software is perhaps the most thorough, but least accessible example of a guidebook (which I have generally found them to be). The importance of each guidebook, for me, becomes how easily I can find the information and how effectively it answers my questions or teaches me a technique.

This book is well organized and reasonably useful in finding information. On reading several sections I actually learned a great deal of technique beyond what I was actually looking for that I had not known before. What it lacks is actual depth as to "why" something is done the way it is done. As I mentioned, I was really helped by this book in several areas where I have had trouble with the software, but the steps were pretty much 1, 2, 3, without much extra detail. This lack of detail became important when some difficulty needed to have troubleshooting applied that was outside the steps outlined in the book.

This is sort of difficult to explain, but an analogy might be if you wanted to make, for example, ranch dressing, and your recipe was "go out to the store and buy ranch dressing." Yes, in the end you will have ranch dressing, but you aren't significantly closer to knowing how to make it. I apologize to Mr. Young for the bizarre analogy, but it demonstrates what I feel, my opinion, about the guidebook.

This is an excellent step by step guide and it will get you up and running on FCP7 quickly and will answer many of the questions you have and will teach you a good many things, probably more than you will ever use as an average user. Advanced users will probably want to go somewhere else.
