TIATON AND STATEHOOD (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996). Jorri C. Duursma's new work investigates a phenomenon which seems to con-found both these expectations: the persistence in Europe of five diminutive States overshadowed by much larger States as well as by the ever-consolidating structure of the European Union. Duursma examines five Micro-States:7 Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco, Andorra, and the Vatican City, and asks how the diversity born of self-determination can be accommodated in a society of States anxious to enforce the countervailing principle of territorial integrity.

This is the first book to provide a thorough international legal account of the European micro-states. Jorri Duursma examines notions of self-determination and statehood in the context of international law, and provides solutions for problems of secession. Drawing on many unpublished documents, she tackles the important questions of what constitutes a people with a right to self-determination, and who is allowed to secede from a state, developing a novel approach to statehood and fragmentation.
