Unabridged. After twenty-first century America exploded in the chaos of a nuclear nightmare, a raw new landscape emerged, a world where death and dreams clash. Still, the best of the human spirit endures: the hope, the will to survive. But so does the worst: the greed, tyranny, the easy death. In his enduring odyssey across the hostile world called Deathlands, Ryan Cawdor is a warrior no enemy wants to cross.

An earthquake in the Arkansas dust bowls leaves the companions for dead, until they are all reunited except for armorer J. B. Dix. Alive, though with no memory of the past, he is in the uncertain employ of the ironfisted ruler of a vital outpost along the routes that traverse the wastelands. Duma is the biggest, most dangerous ville in all of Deathlands, where jolt, jack, booze and sex are worth more than human life. Stalking Duma and preparing to attack this orgy of firepower is a crazed band of inbred worshipers of Nagasaki... and their unwilling new sec force led by Ryan Cawdor.

In the Deathlands, the last shot fired is the law.

I first became aware of the Deathlands series when I was working in a bookstore. The series is part of the genre called "Men's Adventure", an attempt by romance publishers to target a male audience. In fact all the Death Lands novels (attributed to "James Axler" but written by a stable of writers) are in fact published by Harlequin the world leader of romance novels. And, much like romance novels, there is a formula at work here right down to the cover art (which usually shows a manly boot, a weapon and some sort of vicious creature).

Needless to say, I wasn't in a hurry to sample this cranked-out cookie-cutter fiction.

Then one day I had to make a several hour drive, and needed something to keep me awake. Such a trip is not the time you want to listen to great literature. I'd always been a fan of science fiction, and particularly the post-holocaust subgenre and given that my options were limited, I picked up Deathlands #79 on CD at a truck stop where these things seem to predominate like the mutant offspring of beef jerky and C.B. accessories.

Man, was I surprised. It of course delivers all the necessary ingredients: sex, violence and action. But what really made it remarkable is that these GraphicAudio adaptations are no ordinary Books-on-tape! DL#79 "Remember Tomorrow" was 6 hours of unabridged novel on 6 CDs. And unlike standard audio books, it wasn't just a single actor reading the book aloud, but a narrator and a full cast of actors playing every role in the story, complete with a musical score and sound effects. The production values are outstanding!

No wonder truckers love this stuff!

Is it going to win a Penn-Faulkner award, probably not. But neither is your average (or even superior) action movie going to win an Oscar. Is it going to keep you awake when you've got 300 miles to go? Hell yeah, and then some. I'll leave out the plot summary - you can see that in the description at the top - but I will say I had no trouble following the story even though I was dropping in on book #79 (of God knows how many), which I realize sounds like a backhanded compliment, but it's the truth. In fact, I almost wish there had been a few more idiosyncrasies to a world 100 years hence, but since you can't always hang on every word and "reread" passages when driving, that's probably for the best.

Finally, judging by the reviews of the paperback Remember Tomorrow (Deathlands) on Amazon, fans of the series consider it to be one of the weaker entries. If that's the case, I can't wait for the next time I have to spend all day behind the wheel. I already have another one at the ready.
