When the Lusitania sank, more than one thousand people died. One passenger, however, survived to become a changed man, giving up his life as a petty thief but keeping a small silver statue that would become a family heirloom to future generations. Now, nearly a century later, that heirloom, one of a priceless, long-separated set of three, has been snatched away from the Sullivans. And Malachi, Gideon, and Rebecca Sullivan are determined to recover their great-great-grandfather's treasure, reunite the Three Fates, and make their fortune. The quest will take them from their home in Ireland to Helsinki, Prague, and New York and introduce them to a formidable female professor whose knowledge of Greek mythology will aid them in their quest; to a daring exotic dancer who sees the Fates as her chance at a new life; and to a seductive security expert who knows how to play high-tech cat-and-mouse. And it will pit them in a suspenseful fight against an ambitious woman who will stop at nothing to acquire the Fates.

I've been a fan of the author for decades, to the point where I normally pre-order her books in hardcover. It seems as if the time has come to rethink that habit and save my money. First, almost everything in the book is a rehash of a previous book. Red-headed heroine? The Search. Renovating an old house? Tribute. Small-town bully who goes too far? The Witness. Precocious toddler? Rising Tides. (There's even a scene with the toddler that appears to be lifted straight from that book). On and on. The "surprise" plot device can be guessed within the first chapter. The heroine is not too bright a bulb, and it's simply infuriating to accept her choice to pay off MILLIONS of dollars of debt that isn't hers. The book is amazingly slow for more than half, then sort of trundles along. Apparently, the author wanted to play with the idea of Southern relationships by listing lots of people with long names and convoluted connections to the heroine...but none of these characters appear again in the story. They are named. That's it. They don't further the plot. In fact, very little furthers this plot. I don't see a lot of heat between Shelby and Griff. He falls for her red hair at first sight. There's actually more warmth between Griff and Shelby's precocious toddler. I was terribly disappointed with this book. At least in other novels, there's something else to engage me, like details of training Search and Rescue dogs (The Search). There is no interesting sub plot here. If you've never read a book by Nora Roberts, don't start with this one! If you're a big fan, borrow it from the library if you must. But don't waste a dime on it.
No suspense. It was obvious from first chapters how this story was going to end. Combination of the movie "Charade" and Mary Higgins Clark's book "Before I Say Goodbye" which was done much better with probably 200 less pages. Another reviewer commented on the dialogue not defining the characters, which I totally agree with. When a group of the woman held a conversation (same with the men), it was hard to tell which character was speaking. The love angle and scenes were boring, same old, same old from many of her previous books. The hero Griffin (Or insert Bo, Finn, Gull etc) is the same guy we've met before in her books. Unruly hair to his collar, a swagger, a "fixer" who falls instantly in "lust" etc. Meh! A lot more I could comment on why I didn't like this book but why bother? I wasted enough time reading it. Would not recommend wasting yours!
That paragraph I wrote after reading and giving a 2 star review. However, after recently reading a few of Ms Roberts older books, I had to change my opinion to 1 star. For same reasons, but more so! I had forgotten how enthralling her books could be, giving you the feeling you were THERE. This book is an absolute failure. Never felt I knew any of the characters and worse, MsRoberts didn't even try to flesh them out with her endless, meaningless dialogue. Another reviewer commented on how quickly that whiny Shelby recovered from her horrible 1st marriage. Agreed! There is something terribly wrong with a woman who lives with a controlling monster for 5yrs, but after 3months is ready to marry a man she barely knew??? Oh please!

Now I don't know if Amazon will allow this but I'd like to comment on most of the 4 and 5 star reviewers. It appears that most of us who have rated this book 3 stars or less have taken the time to explain why we didn't care for it and how disappointed we are that an author we have loved is writing unbelievable tripe. Most of the 5 star reviewers say same thing - "Nora doesn't disappoint! Great book-couldn't put it down!" WHY? Why was it so great? Why was it a page turner? What can you tell us that would make us want to read this?? Are you all her friends and family?? Or afraid to admit that an otherwise accomplished author can turn out a stinker?
My first Nora Roberts book was 'Hidden Riches' and I was hooked from that point! However, over the past few years, I have found that Ms Roberts' books seemed to have lost some measure of whatever it was that made me love her characters and story lines. I have passed on reading her latest 'witch' trilogy, because it got such negative reviews, and it sounded like a poor man's version of her earlier fantasy fiction series. NR's latest stand alone novels and her most recent 'In Death' books have also been disappointing reads, so I really hesitated before purchasing 'The Liar.'

'The Liar' is not a bad book. However, it reads more like the Harlequin novels that NR wrote in the past. There are the standard NR phrases that she uses in every book. For example, her characters never remain angry, but they hold on to their 'mad.' It's never rain, but 'the wet.' There are a lot of flower, food, furniture descriptions, a prerequisite for any NR novel. I have noticed that the author generally creates one of two types of female characters in her novels, the strong, ball buster independent career woman, or the passive, weak male dominated woman. In 'The Liar' we meet Shelby Foxworth, the latter type, recently widowed, and doing her best to pay down her late husband's debts, while bringing her daughter back to her hometown to start a new life. The plot is slow moving, the romance between Shelby and Griffin is slow and sweet, lacking real sparks, and the suspense is really non-existent.

So many reviewers seem to love anything that Nora Roberts writes, and I truly wish that I could be one of those reviewers. I feel sad that 'The Liar' is just the most recent disappointment from an author I used to love. I judge the quality of a book by how badly I want to do a reread, but this book is one that I will definitely not be reading again.
