Vine (Anna's Book; The House of Stairs), the suspense-writing persona of Ruth Rendell, sets out what seems to be a full, straightforward picture. This is Barbara Vine at her very best, this story starts off quite slowly and you start to think nothing is going to happen, and then things really do start to happen, the relationship between the two men, Ivo and Tim, gets going and reaches a peak, then from then on the fascination of the relationship starts to slow down, from there on.
No Night is Too Long is a 1994 crime, mystery novel depicting a bisexual love triangle, a possible murder and the aftermath. The book was penned by British writer Ruth Rendell, writing as Barbara Vine. Set in Alaska and Suffolk, this story is written in three first-person narrations, the first and longest of which is the memoir-confession of Tim Cornish. Tim, a would-be novelist of twenty-four, has just received his master's degree.
No Night is Too Long is a classic crime novel by bestselling, prize-winning author Barbara Vine Tim Cornish thought he'd gotten away with murder. For months after he'd killed his lover off the Alaskan coast, there hadn't been a word. But then the letters started to arrive. It seems that someone knows what Tim has done. This compelling thriller delivers such a dark picture of romantic love that murder seems its natural mate.
This book’s appearance and summary felt dated and underwhelming, but everything about Barbara Vine’s story . I, like many before me, first heard of the haunting Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell) novel No Night is Too Long via the BBC adaptation.
This book’s appearance and summary felt dated and underwhelming, but everything about Barbara Vine’s story is the exact opposite. Tim, the main character, is unlikeable; he’s cruel and unfaithful, but he receives his comeuppance for all his deceit, and he suffers tremendously. The plot twist at the end of the film indeed takes it to a whole new level, as does the references (and musical quotes) to Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier. But I had no idea of the mind-blowing impression the book would have on me!
It was particularly germane to Tim, and it related directly to murder. In No Night Is Too Long, Barbara Vine has written a tour de force, rich in characters and setting, a remarkable novel by an internationally celebrated master of her craft.
It was particularly germane to Tim, and it related directly to murder. Tim thought he'd gotten away with it.
