Every memory holds forbidden places, places of shame or terror not willingly revisited, sometimes merely a cruel word said in haste and never forgotten, a mean or thoughtless action, but sometimes that memory is a monster, foul murder left untried.

**SPOILERS**

I have always enjoyed reading Alanna Knight's books, from her early work in the 1970's through to the Rose McQuinn mysteries, but this book really disappoints.

It is a recent book, but has Inspector Faro recall one of his early cases.
He is on assignment in England and is confronted by several mysteries.

One involves his fear that a friend will be murdered. However, he does absolutely nothing to prevent this from happening. Even when he has evidence in his hands, he lets it go without investigating.

The other mysteries, as he suspects, are all tied together, involving a criminal's convoluted, and often inexplicable, actions. Even though Faro figures it all out, again, he does not take proper action.

Instead of checking out the place he suspects the criminal is hiding, he allows himself to fall into several traps. Then, instead of informing fellow law enforcement officers what he knows, he just sits there, quietly, for days, until he, himself, is nearly killed.

Saving the day is someone who really has no part in the narrative. A very contrived ending.

I thought Inspector Faro is supposed to be a great detective. Why then is he portrayed as being so inept??!!

I have read every Inspector Faro book and loved them all. This one really is disappointing. I'm not sure if it is terrible editing, lack of proper punctuation, or just the story itself, but I returned it because it was almost unreadable. I was so excited to read this latest in the series, but I couldn't even get past the 2nd chapter. I hope the next one is back to Alanna Knight's usual high standards !

I am a Detective/Murder/Mystery aficionado, and, I must say, the Inspector Faro stories are up there with Midsomer Murders and the other British works I so enjoy.

At a social event, Inspector Faro sees a painting of a beautiful woman he once knew - a woman he believes got away with murder. From that point, Alanna Knight expertly takes the reader back to the early police life of a 27-year-old Faro, who is stunned to find the unproven murderess has changed her name and is about to marry an infatuated school chum of his. But that resighting occurs during a supposed wild goose chase for an escaped prisoner. The inspector has a clear cut case of deception on his hands, no matter which way he turns.
