If you're not used to reading long books, you might try something by Willa Cather instead, like The Professor's House or Death Comes for the Archbishop. That's not a detective novel, it just sounds like one in the title) Cather's books seem to me more lively than Wharton's. They're set in the Southwest, but they're about human interaction, not western adventure. Pride and Prejudice is a romantic novel by author Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice is a romantic novel by author Jane Austen. Given here is a short summary of the famous novel. It is a fine blend of romance, with some very dramatic situations, and succeeds in making people believe that such a love story is possible. While Jane Bennet, the oldest and most beautiful of the Bennet sisters, attracts Mr. Bingleys eye and sparks fly, Darcy upsets another sister, Elizabeth, with his proud behavior and arrogance. She is now looking for every opportunity to demean Darcy and see him down.
Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. A tour de force of wit and sparkling dialogue, Pride and Prejudice shows how the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet and the aristocratic Mr Darcy must have their pride humbled and their prejudices dissolved before they can acknowledge their love for each other. An unputdownable read that challenges perceptions, and subtly marks a line in feminist history and thought.

The death of the title, is merely one event out of many, in the course of a life well lived. Death comes for the Archbishop as it must come for us all one day, and when it does, he is in a place he loves, surrounded by people who know his worth. The ending I felt was sheer perfection, there is a feeling of everything being in its right time.
