Der Meister und Margarita (The Master and Margarita) is an opera in two acts by York Höller. The libretto, also by Höller, is based on Mikhail Bulgakov's novel, The Master and Margarita. Höller composed the work between 1984 and 1989, and revised it in 2008. Der Meister und Margarita was premiered at the Paris Opéra (Palais Garnier) on 20 May 1989, staged by Hans Neuenfels and conducted by Lothar Zagrosek, with Roland Herrmann and Karan Armstrong in the title roles

In Moscow, two museums honor the memory of Mikhail Bulgakov and The Master and Margarita 2004: an adaptation of the novel by Edward Kemp and directed by Steven Pimlott was staged in July 2004 at the Chichester Festival Theatre, UK. The cast included Samuel West as the Master and Michael Feast as Woland.

Der Meister und Margarita book. Le Monde listed the novel number 94 on its 100 books of the century. I found it absurd, outrageous, inconsistent, but for the most part entertaining. I would probably appreciate the novel more if I better understood Bulgakov’s scathing satire on atheistic Soviet society, which he exposes as materialistic and bourgeois.

Mikhail Bulgakov worked on this luminous book throughout one of the darkest decades of the century. Bulgakov was neither unknown nor forgotten. His plays had begun to be revived in theatres during the late fifties and were published in 1962. His last revisions were dictated to his wife a few weeks before his death in 1940 at the age of forty-nine. For him, there was never any question of publishing the novel. His superb Life of Monsieur de Molière came out in that same year. His early stories were reprinted. Then, in 1965, came the Theatrical Novel, based on his years of experience with Stanislavsky’s renowned Moscow Art Theatre.

Bulgakow finished this great satire of Soviet life (especially literary life) that was finished in 1940. Somehow 90% of it slipped through the censors at one point, and all of it wound up in Samizdat. A modern reader will miss many of the allusions, but the Wikipedia article about the book is the only companion you need to get nearly full appreciation of this great work.

Even without the allusions, the book is wildly funny, and the book manages to be both a great, fun, holiday read and a literary masterpiece.

It has to be a very challenging task to write such a book with Satan and Pontius Pilate as two of the major characters. Needless to say, this entailed lots of magic, including a huge, sarcastic, talking black cat as part of Satan's retinue.
Very different from anything else I have read, yet very compelling. I especially liked the use of language, it is very light and satirical writing. The storyline is basically the Devil coming to Moscow and causing havoc, I suppose it is meant as a social satire though to be honest I couldn't read that much into (or out of) it, but then it's also excellent entertainment.
