This is an excerpt from N. Kay’s newly published illustrated novel Chicken Butt; The Story of a Man, illustrated by Daniel Meisels. A man fainting from a needle and a simple blood pressure test is pretty chickeny, but, for C. it was part of his makeup – his nature. He was, after all, a giant chicken. But even for a chicken, it was a little on the pathetic side. And this wasn’t the only time C. B. had fainted: he’d fainted after stitches, in a biology class when the teacher described heart palpitations in detail, he’d fainted watching a pro-vegetarian movie entitled The Slaughter House and once he’d blacked out from standing up too quickly. Kay’s newly published illustrated novel Chicken Butt; The Story of a Man, illustrated by. . Chicken Butt thought he was smart, intelligent, insightful, and many other positive adjectives, but – as we all know – he was a contemptible chicken of a man. C. s ego was always thinking up new ways to reinforce Chicken Butt’s bloated perception of himself. Actually, C. s ego was really quite brilliant at it – as we have already seen.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a chicken-like man, wonder no more. Chicken Butt; The Story of a Man is a satirical piece on human understanding of identity, all under an amusingly deprecating portrayal of Chicken Butt - the chicken-like protagonist. He fights through a world of existential egotism with delusions of grandeur and struggles to tackle the harsh reality of existence humorously stumbling and fumbling in the most humane of manners. The novel attempts to get back to one's younger - more foolish self, and endeavors to spend some time smirking at the lessons learned through the follies of childhood experiences. The episodic narrative expresses an academic sophistication rare to novels with illustrations; the accompanying visuals are pleasantly comedic and expressive.

Chicken Butt: a Story of a Man, enabled me to take a trip down memory lane; remembering all the difficult situations one experiences during his childhood, as well as laugh at all the times we may have thought something was way more serious than it actually was. This book touches upon all situations we experience through our journey into adolescence and lets you recollect all those lost memories you yearn you could recover. I read this book cover-to-cover in one sitting, and am currently reading it for the 3rd time. It's an A+ book written by young writers with an aspiring and bright future. Good job! I hope to see more from these authors soon!

I read this book almost straight through, and laughed out loud on repeated occasions. Its witty take on life and youth is fresh and clever. Reminds me of Babbit, by Sinclair Lewis or Terry Pratchett's work. Old and young will appreciate Chicken Butt's amusing episodes. I am 25 and liked it, my brother is 13 and liked it as well. The drawings also add to the story, and are very well done.
All in all, a promising debut.

This is a well-written and very funny book about a solipsistic young man/chicken. You don't see a lot of good satire these days which is why I liked this book so much. Reminds me a bit of early Vonnegut, and of some of those great writers of the 60s and 70s. Let's hope we see more from this author.
