I had originally given this book a pass, mainly because I'd already read some of what Inman writes about in other volumes, and because I prefer full-length memoirs to anecdotes. But it turns out Inman has a good ear for a tale, and he held me riveted many times. I'd recommend this book as an introductory work for anyone wanting to learn about the American West from the days of the fur traders to the arrival of the railroad.

I learned about the book from a Death Valley Days story. I was interested in reading the story so I ordered the book. If you like Western Folk lore, this is an excellent book. It combines history with stories of events that happened forming the history of the region of the Great Salt Area. Since the stories are as remembered by folks who witnessed the events, I am sure there is some poetic license. It still is a great book telling about history by people who lived it.

While the stories are intriguing, the utter lack of professional editing makes some portions almost impossible to understand. Entire paragraphs are inserted into other paragraphs, rendering pages of text a meaningless jumble of sentences. Interspersed throughout are glaring typographical errors. There are several instances of text ckearly intended to be a website link, as though the book was quickly and artlessly converted from an electronic version to print. I was looking forward to the pleasure of a good read. The stories are marvelous IF you can manage to decipher misplaced texts and other issues. Very, very poor editing.... if any editing was actually attempted. I can't recommend this version of the book at all.

Having watched westerns since I was a small child, reading "The Great Salt Lake Trail" made me realize where Hollywood got all of it's great stories of the west from. The personal stories of the brave men and women that had the will to look for new opportunities in the west are incredible. A great read and one that I would recommend.
Great book. I watch Death Valley Days on tv and some of the stories in the book are also on this program.
Received as a gift. This book is turning out to be more interesting than I thought when I opened it.
