Vibrant, contemporary and with great sense of humor.

FEISKO

IL BRUTTO: Almost none of the characters in this book are agreeable, decent human beings. There are no "good guys" save maybe the African clandistina prostitute that calls the police to help her married client/john when he is injured and thus risks revealing herself to be identified and deported. We who take the Bible position of the universal sinful condition of mankind are not surprised, but don't enjoy the reminder.
IL CATTIVO: It's an overall depressing story of a 12 yr old who flunks a grade due to a night of vandalism in which the hooligans who roped him into the event and intimidated him with negative peer pressure get off scott-free. He plots revenge on his single lady teacher, who herself has fallen in love with the flamenco has-been who date-raped her (betcha didn't know Spiderman was a date-rape drug.)
IL BUONO: Ammaniti brilliantly weaves sub-tales and rabbit trails that are immensely entertaining: The account of the broken washing machine, the catapault, the gorilla mask (in my adolescence the paper bag was mentioned in less-than-edifying conversation.) Looking past the overall depressing plot, the comical casini generated by the books characters in their best laid plans mi fanno ridere, quasi crepapelle.

Ammaniti writes masterfully. His knack for creating complex situations and fascinating characters is impressive, as is his understanding of adolescent behavior. But the level of stomach-turning violence is too high for me.

The characters are unsympathetic, obnoxious bullies or pathetic victims. I expected a positive, romantic story in an Italian beach town. My mistake. I found it a bitter book.
