Purely historical fiction, and at times skirting the genre of Southern Gothic, it focuses on young Marcel, the blue-eyed mulatto son of a plantation owner who keeps Marcel's mother and his family in luxury in New The Feast of All Saints is one of the most beautifully written books I have read.

This was my first Anne Rice book, so I can't compare it with her other work. My daughter insisted that I read Rice, but I was not interesting in vampires or witches and therefore chose this historical tome. Published in 1979, it's Anne Rice's second time out of the gate.
