Look up, and swear by the green of the spring that you’ll never forget. Siegfried Sassoon (March 1919).

Look up, and swear by the green of the spring that you’ll never forget. John Merritt sat back in the first-class compartment, watching the familiar countryside slide by, now clear and green in the winter sun, now hidden by drifting puffs of brilliant white lambswool steam from the engine up ahea. amiliar, in that he could recognise the places – there was the spire of Whitmore church pointing heavenward out of bare trees to the south; there.

But finally, one by one, the guns fall silen. y the Green of the Spring relives the last terrible months of the Great War . y the Green of the Spring relives the last terrible months of the Great War and the uneasy, exhausted peace which followed it. From the North-West Frontier to the war in France and the civil war in Ireland, John Masters follows the fortunes of four Kent families – the Cates, the Rownlands, the Strattons and the Gorses – through the cataclysm that ended the golden Edwardian dream for ever. By the Green of the Spring, first published in 1981, is the third, self-contained volume.

BY THE GREEN OF SPRING is the third and final volume in John Masters' trilogy Loss of Eden. The trilogy, starting with NOW GOD BE THANKED, depicts the impact of WW I on British life. HEART OF WAR carries the saga into the conflict's desperate middle years. BY THE GREEN OF SPRING brings the war to its close and casts the survivors (half the war-time generation was killed) on the barren shores of peace. An impressive, large-scale work. One could imagine that the book all end with the cease fire. On the contrary, the author described the after war period and how the British population started to rebuild their lives entwined with the destiny of the main characters.

His first novel Looking for Alaska was mostly 34 by his experience at a boarding school

His first novel Looking for Alaska was mostly 34 by his experience at a boarding school. This book made the Top 10 Best Book for Young Adults and undoubtedly 35 it. The novel is flawlessly written, moving and stimulating. All the characters are real and can create connections with their audience. They no longer seem to behave like fictional characters, but rather real people that have similar problems and ideas as young adults nowadays.

John Masters has that rare ability to bring the characters in the book to life. An enthralling novel about the changes brought about in the period of the First World war and its horrors and the effect on everyones lives thereafter. I found it difficult to put the book down once I had started. 3 people found this helpful.

This final book in the trilogy was a perfect finale to Master's' magnum opus. The reading of thee first two is an important factor to the full enjoyment of this fast moving historical novel. Anyone interested in the real horrors of World War 1 and its effects on the lives and social changes In a class controlled society cannot afford to miss this classic. As an ex-soldier born in this particular rural setting I can identify with most of the characters and, more importantly, the validity of the fact that all the event could have happened within this real historical framework..
I enjoyed every second of it and couldn't give any book a stronger recommendation.
