Gettysburg, PA, is one of the most active paranormal hot spots in the world. This is the place where 94,000 Union troops under General George Meade clashed with 72,000 Confederate soldiers under General Robert E. Lee in what became the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. From July 1 to 3, 1863, more than 51,000 Americans were killed, wounded or went missing. It was the turning point of the war, the biggest chance for the Confederacy to win the war.

Kat Rogers is not enthusiastic about leaving her friends and missing ninth grade to be homeschooled on a year-long road trip with her family. She is also not happy about spending time in a confined RV with her younger brother, Brian. History is dull and battlefields are boring, until she sees a figure at the Gettysburg battlefield who captures her attention. He could be a young man dressed up to entertain visitors, except that she can see through him. Once Kat realizes that this Confederate soldier needs her help, she discovers that history isnt dull and battlefields can be interesting places. With the assistance of Brian and an eccentric lady from town, Kat works to resolve unanswered questions and free the ghostly Will from his very earthly concerns. Along the way she realizes that touring the country with her family might just be an exciting adventure.

I enjoyed this book, even though it is clearly written for the younger set. It was engaging. The characters were well-rounded and sympathetic. Though I already know a fair amount concerning the battle at Gettysburg, it was interesting to revisit the subject in such an entertaining way. I can see young people forming an interest of the history by reading this. My only complaint, and the only reason I did not give the book a five-star rating, is the amount of typographical errors it contained. One readthrough by a proofreader would have cleaned it up and averted the distractions such errors create. That being said, I would recommend this book.

Ghost on the Battlefield blends adventure with history in such a way that children will not even know they're learning about their country's past. The characters are engaging and seem like they stepped out of real life and into the pages of the book. While I am older than the intended audience, the plotline still grabbed my attention as I wait to see if Kat could help her ghost. This book would be especially good for a classroom read!
