Daphne du Maurier's h-century Cornwall, last refuge of brave Cavaliers . Returning to The King's General, decades later, reminds me of how well it expresses the sadness of the dislocated and dispossessed.

Daphne du Maurier's h-century Cornwall, last refuge of brave Cavaliers-was entirely distant to mine; hundreds of years and miles away, further by far than the home I'd left behind.

Daphne du Maurier has always excelled at story-telling

Daphne du Maurier has always excelled at story-telling. Some of the descriptive passages in the early novels are certainly rather hackneyed, and the dialogue clunky. Nevertheless she was driven to write, and dedicated herself to writing page-turners, often with a great element of suspense. Nevertheless this is exactly what she has written in The House on the Strand and she does it very well indeed! I loved the Cornish setting, all those places I have been and seen and which Du Maurier loved so much.

Daphne du Maurier was born in London, the middle of three daughters of prominent actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and . Other significant works include The Scapegoat, The House on the Strand, and The King's General.

Daphne du Maurier was born in London, the middle of three daughters of prominent actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and actress Muriel Beaumont. Her mother was a maternal niece of journalist, author, and lecturer William Comyns Beaumont. Her grandfather was author and Punch cartoonist George du Maurier, who created the character of Svengali in the novel Trilby. The last is set in the middle of the first and second English Civil Wars, written from the Royalist perspective of Du Maurier's adopted Cornwall.

Foreword by Amanda Craig. The Flight of the Falcon was published in 1965, coincidentally the year my own family moved to Italy, to the very city where the novel opens: Rome. The shadows of the Second World War, and the appalling poverty that made Italy so vulnerable to Fascism, were on the wane. Rome was incomparably lovely, a place where artists still came to learn from antiquity, where the privileged enjoyed the dolce vita celebrated by Fellini’s film of that name, and the less privileged were desperate for American dollars.

BTW: I started remembering Daphne Du Maurier's works after I discovered Natasha Solomons, a young Dorset author: The House at Tyneford: A Novel &Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English: A Novel writing in Du Maurier footsteps. 17 people found this helpful. I'd just discovered Du Marier's Rebecca and was immediately drawn to the style of writing. This collection of novels/short stories lives up to my previous experience reading Rebecca. I'm going to purchase My Cousin Rachel soon.
