Set in the early 'Thirties, this excellent story for boys comes from an author who is well-known as a playwright. The early part deals with the escapades of Corky and Ginger, two of the scores of Pony Boys, employed to deliver light loads, who were a common sight in City streets in those days. In the later chapters the urge takes the boys to see the world and they head for Liverpool with the idea of getting jobs on a trawler. Written with humour and understanding, the book is authentic but never old fashioned. 66. Published: a long time ago. Alfie.

com: ONE SMALL BOY,: hardcover, 5½" x 8¾", with dust jacket This book is a beautiful evocation of a Lancashire working-class childhood and youth, that begins in Dublin with the father making the traditional emigrant's journey to England on the Liverpool boat and the family following later to join him in Lancashire. Seen through the eyes of young Michael McCloud - sharp-eyed, observant, and with his Irish-Catholic upbrining making him a bit of an outsider - 'One Small Boy" brings a whole period and community ambitiously to life.
